He had about a dozen excusses for that loss. The one you pointed out is one of them, as is he was drugged, he was dehydrated, he was hurt before training, the ropes were loose, bad advice from the trainer and on it goes. So many that he could have wrote a book about it.oh wait he did...:yep
Kostya Tszyu 'Hatton was better than me in every way tonight.' The guy was a champion even in defeat ... and that was a fight that any other fighter could have made excuses with (if you're gonna count the dodgy ref, rabbit punches, excessive holding and worst low-blow I've ever seen)
I was very impressed with Tszyu after that fight. His attitude was a credit to the sport. To stand in the ring immediately after the fight in the other guy's hometown, take the mic and praise him and tell all his fans that he was the man, but their boy had just taken the title from him fair and square and they should be proud of their new champion, that takes balls. He could have bitched and moaned, most would have disappeared, but he wanted to give Ricky the praise he deserved, and he showed real, genuine class. Every spectator in the stadium would have walked out of there a big Zoo fan, I bet.
yeah, the flu excuse, the heart attack or the leg cramps werent excuses, hold on what about the shoulders, and on it goes.....
A lot of the time, they are asked RIGHT AFTER a decision loss. In the heat of the moment and disappointment. And some genuinely think they did win. They aren't watching the same fight as you and being told who's winning by TV (since most of you NEED THAT!)
Read his autobiography "By George", released in the 90s. Unfortunately, I am not joking. George also claims he was robbed against Holyfield in that book.
There was also the busted eardrum and HGH-itis, I mean hepatitis. Not only was he quoted as saying he won the FIRST Lewis fight, but he repeatedly said (after saying he was affected by leg cramps) that "the judges opinions is what matter, don't nobody else opinion matter none". Then after losing the rematch, Holyfield says "everyone knows I won the fight".
When Chagaev beat Valuev recently, Valuev made no excues, and said The better man won, tonight. :good There are many who take a loss with dignity, but this one stuck out in my mind.
I'm willing to believe that Mike Tyson made no excuses for losing to Buster Douglas initially but after a few minutes of listening to Don King he quickly changed his tune and went along with the program and blamed the referee for the long count. Behind closed doors and out of the public's view I do believe that Tyson would be willing to concede the fact that he lost like a man. However, he was very easily manipulated so the public version we got in front of the media was that of a Don King puppet.
