After having a good 2013, Stevenson went on to look less than impressive against Fonfara. Has a Fighter of the Year ever fallen from grace as quickly the next year as Stevenson?
Stevenson got badly exposed by Fonfara. But looking back at the Cloud and Bellew fights, Stevenson always had those flaws. Someone in the Fonfara-Stevenson RBR said that Stevenson tends to back up when Fonfara lands a double jab. In the Cloud fight, you could see Stevenson backing up when Cloud threw a jab or a double jab. Another thing I noticed is that Stevenson tends to drop his hands when he throws a punch. Just look at the Bellew fight. He also tends to lunge when he throws. The Fonfara fight confirmed what I said about the Bellew fight, that Stevenson gets frustrated if he doesn't get his way, if he has to come to his opponent.
Beat me too it. That said Adonis has probably taken a bigger hit to his popularity cos of the people he didn't fight than Nonito did for fighting the guys he should have and losing. If that makes sense.
I think people overemphasis the Fonfara fight a bit. Fonfara was never a bum, and despite dropping Stevenson, is was a still a wide UD for Stevenson
Yes, Stevenson clearly won, but Fonfara showed some flaws in Stevenson's game. Fonfara is a B-level fighter, and was given almost no chance against Stevenson.
The glass jawed pimp is a joke. Would be better for the division if he loses this month, he isn't going anywhere near the top LHW's.
First one to spring to mind for me as well. :good FOTY in 2012, and then embarrassed twice in 2013 (first by Rigondeaux, and then in the Darchinyan rematch even though he pulled it out)
Donaires fall from grace was a respectable one though, you didn't see him ducking all of the top/dangerous guys at his weight class like Stevenson is at the moment, he went out on his shield.
He was, but the fall was harder. Donaire lost decisively to Rigondeaux, and had absolutely no business trailing on the cards against shot Vic while still rated highly on most p4p lists. Stevenson didn't struggle as badly with Fonfara as Donaire on either of those nights.
True... But Stevenson is going to end up getting starched by one of these fringe contender types sooner or later, and then I think Donaires fall from grace will be a little more "graceful". We both know that Stevenson isn't likely to face the top names at LHW any time soon.
Donaire dropped off heavy and more because his high was much higher than Stevensons' and he actually lost the following year where Adonis hasn't. However, Donaire also followed up his much stronger FOTY by facing and getting the loss to Rigondeaux, who everyone claimed and whined that he was certain to "duck" and never face. Either way, it is easily arguable that only one or neither of these two were ever the FOTY... RING named Marquez in 2012 and Stevenson in 2013. BWAA named Donaire in 2012 and Mayweather in 2013.
Trinidad or Glen Johnson might be next up for discussion...? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_magazine_Fighter_of_the_Year Ha, looks like somebody edited the wiki page. I could have sworn Adonis won it last year for the Ring Mag and Marquez in 2012... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_Ray_Robinson_Award
Right! :nod What a crazy difference between his 2002 and 2003. First, in 2002, he dethrones the p4p king and then proves it no fluke in a rematch. Then, in 2003, he gets upset by a 6-1 underdog and then has it proven no fluke in a rematch. Crazy.
