As the title asks, has there ever been an occasion where a fighter was taking enough punishment to warrant a stoppage, but in the midst of the referee stepping in or moving to wave it off, knocked down his opponent? Or at least hurt him enough to make the referee change his mind? Lots of fights get called off early, and I could see a fight like Marquez-Vasquez 2 having the fighter getting stopped quickly land a bomb that makes the referee think twice or at least demonstrate he was good enough despite the referee going through with it.

Anyone know of a case as described?

Yes, Mohamed Kawoya once knocked out John Wesley Meekins a split second after the referee stopped the fight awarding Meekins a TKO. It is on video, quite fun ending.

Julian Jackson-Herol GRaham. Jackson was about to be stopped on a cut although he probably had the rest of the round

I remember very well when my very good friend, Paul Venti stopped this match.

This is the punch that lead to one of the most notorious endings to a boxing match, ever. The right hand thrown by Kawaya, at the exact same time as the fight is being stopped, sent Meekhins sprawling to the canvas, where he stayed for well over what would have been a 10 count.

Was in the corner for a guy having his first(and only) fight and he was getting battered. We were looking for the towel, his mother had run to ringside crying to stop it, the ref moved in with his hand out and then our fella swung a HailMary and ko'd the other guy out cold. Still laugh about that one.

Nigel Benn was on the point of being saved by the ref, if not knocked out by Anthony Termintor Logan, having been dropped in the first, and having taken a barrage of big punches from Logan in the the second, when Benn missed with a Right Hand shot, but amazingly caught Logan with an Almighty Desperation Left Hook on the upswing, Nigels Last throw of the dice produced a fantastic 10 - the 10 count over Logan.

Not a knockdown, but just as Johnny LoBianco originally moved in to stop Norton-Quarry in round five, Jerry dipped Ken's knees with a right. LoBianco's forward momentum then carried him between the two, but he immediately retreated to give Jerry another chance at rallying. It was strictly a momentary buckle though, not a fight changing interference, but it raises interesting questions about how the peak JQ of Mathis and Spencer might have done with Norton, as Ken never buckled Jerry like that despite missing hardly anything.
