Rarely, do any great fighters lose on their best night.

He gave no excuses for Bowe, despite not taking the best strategic approach.

The constant excuses got a bit ridiculous by the end of his career. Either he's deluded or they were legitimate excuses, in which case I wonder what he was doing fighting in the first place. Didn't he say the ring was too bouncy to take out his opponent after the Savarese fight?

Azumah Nelson, more so for bad performances than defeats though.

The "excuses" you mention started in his mid-thirties ... no doubt he fought on way too long ... however was there ever a fighter who showed more heart against better opposition? Fighting bigger and younger men for the most part?

In the literal interpretation of the thread, I would say:

No, Fritzie Zivic probably had more, as he had to excuse over 60 defeats!!!

George Foreman deserves a mention for his hilarious excuses for his defeats (or near-defeats). Many of these excuses came many years after he claimed that he finally learned to "accept" that Ali beat him.

    -Ref counted too fast
-I was drugged by the same trainer I went back to work with in the 1990s
-I was about to knock Ali out but I got distracted by seeing my friend betray me by rooting for Ali
-The judges robbed me against Holyfield
-I took it too easy on Stewart because I didn't want to hurt him
-I took it too easy on Morrison because I didn't want to hurt him

Read an interview with Tommy Loughran sometime. He never lost a fight in his life, according to him. He has more excuses than the NBA has playoff games
