Has any commentator ever embarrassed themselves like Foreman did with Tito/Hopkins?

We all can't be right all the time, so why is it such an embarrassment to be wrong? So what George called it wrong, it still does not take away the fact the man knows boxing, and has been boxing before any of us were born and knew how to spell boxing.

Funny timing on this thread, I just so happened to watch the entire fight on Youtube about a month ago, first time I had seen it since 2001. I had the same impression you did, first, Hopkins put in a fantastic performance both mentally and physically in one of the best executed game plans and fights of the decade. And two, George Foreman was throwing any credibility he had as a boxing commentator out the window.

I'm not talking about someone taking away a different impression on a fight than my own, no way. Nor was this like a casual onlooker who didn't understand the sport of boxing. This was George Foreman saying completely ASININE and absurd things, as if he was a newborn baby who could magically speak perfect English but couldn't grasp the concept of Earth. Or anything, really. There were moments in the fight where, and this is not verbatim because it's been a month since I last watched it, but I went off about it at a party last weekend and the whole deal is very much fresh in my mind.

    Lampley:

"He's completely dominating a prime Tito Trinidad, George. You have to give Hopkins credit at some point, he's won pretty much every second of every round and is now hurting Trinidad."

    Foreman:

"Oh no, no, no. You don't want to do THAT against Tito!!!!!"

    Merchant:

"Well, I don't know what you mean by THAT, George, but it looks like Trinidad is on borrowed time and will be lucky to make it to the final bell."

    Foreman:

    "BAD strategy against TITO!!!!!!!"

It was like, such blasphemy, that if I tried to create a comedy sketch spoofing how ridiculous it was, I'm not sure I could take it up that extra notch in order to make it a satire. It was legitimately incredible.

Bobby Czyz on Tyson HOlyfield 1. He kept saying that if Holyfield trade with Mike, it will be end of the night (for HOlyfield). He also kept saying how Tyson's body shots and al lthe holding and grappling will take effect on Holyfield late rin the fight.

It turned out to be the absolute opposite.

He also said Holyfield was holding like nothing he's ever seen, vice-grip style. Although Tyson iseem to hold more.

  7. Least embarressing - Harold Lederman. Blokes never mention him around here, he's solid as.

I recall back in '91 Riddick Bowe fought Rodolfo Marin on the undercard to "Tyson-Ruddock 2" on PPV, and Dr. Ferdie Pacheco called Riddick Bowe---"Ruddock Buttock" on the air......... That killed me........

It is one thing to make a wrong prediction before a fight, but how do you not change your mind or at least acknowledge that it looks like your pick is in for a hard night, till the 10th round, when they were being constantly flogged in the previous rounds?

The additional of Lederman to that HBO commentary team is what makes me always want to get the HBO coverage when more than one team is calling a big fight.

    Lederman is awesome.

    :rofl :rofl :rofl

Some of the most outrageous score cards have been from him. He's horrible imo.

I completely remember Foreman on that night. It took until about the 10th round or so for George to realize that Tito wasn't going to win this one and that the big power punch he was waiting for was no longer there and had long been neutralized by Hopkins. Larry Merchant pretty much had to verbally slap him upside the head to straighten him out and bring him to reality.

Punchout...you're such a nuthugger mate lol.

Jones Jr is an amazing commentator. He needs to comeback.

Foreman: "Tonight the referee is going to be the most important man in the ring other than the two fighters".
