People need to stop saying this. Mcgregor didn't go up 2 weight classes, He just fought closer to his natural fighting weight. The guy he fought was also moving up a weightclass for the fight and didn't even train at all. We just saw what happened when he wasn't cutting 30 pounds to beat up on smaller fighters. If you want to talk about something impressive, look at Randy Couture at 45 coming out of retirement from LHW to win the HW title beating up guys 25+ pounds heavier than himself.
back in the day you had no weight limit and dudes below 170 fought dudes over 250lb, that's when they were tough :rasta
Bj Penn fought Lyoto Machida at HEAVYWEIGHT. Plus McGregor was not fighting a welterweight. Diaz took the fight on 2 weeks notice. It was two 155 lbers fighting at welter and not cutting weight. McGregor has to nearly die to make 145.
The guy he fought is much bigger yes or no? Try a foot taller for a start. Ok McGregor was cutting hard to fight at 145lbs but the truth is Diaz wouldnt make the same weight even in a concentration camp for 6 months. McGregor is a comfortable 155lb fighter who would eventually fight at 170lbs towards back end of his career.... The guys only 5'8 ffs
I hear what you are saying mate but u must agree both walking around in every day society Diaz is a much bigger human. McGregor is a 155lber as a fighting weight
The only problem back then was the plus 250lbers were mainly untrained and useless..... today the sport is very professional.
Francisco Trinaldo, normally a 155er but his 1st UFC fight was at 185, he's never fought at 170 as far as I know.
Sakuraba deserves a mention. As a 170 pound chain smoker he fought a 90 minute match with Royce Gracie and the same day fought to a 15 minute draw with the n.1 HW in the world Igor Vovchanchyn who was on something like 30 fight win streak. He also beat several top ranked prime fighters who outweighed him by 40+ pounds.
Frankie Edgar was the ufc champ at 155 but in reality he is a very small 145. I bet he could make 135 without too much trouble if he wanted to. The guy is tiny.
Agree Kel Nate Diaz is the bigger man.:good But Diaz has always been a 155 lber only had 2 or 3 fights at 170 when Rory and Dony Yong Kim manhandled the farrk out of him and he rightly went back to 155 where he belongs. What I meant was that all the talk of Conor jumping two weight classes to fight a welter was BS as Diaz clearly is not a legitimate welter and never has been.
And mma has clearly evolved from then as far as weight classes and so forth. My quest was, has anyone jumped 2 weightclasses without taking any tune ups?
