Before the Wilder fight this guy had like 3 fans, now according to ALL wilder fans he's the second best guy in the division.

    Other examples of this?

Dillian Whyte, Carlos Takam, Adrian Broner, Derek Chisora and many more.

As for Ortiz, before he fought Wilder he was the bogeyman of the division until after he lost he suddenly turned into a stiff old man with no footwork, high blood pressure and 20 years was added to his age.

So you may as well delete this special needs thread as it's just been rendered redundant.

pretty much anyone from the UK who has not lost badly. Put on a good enough display, and they'll be liked. we seem to love a good loser

It's the only decent win on Wilder's record so of course Ortiz has to be made out to be some monster everyone avoided to suit their agenda.

Fact is Ortiz's best and only significant win over Jennings almost 3 years ago was overrated at the time, people inflated Jennings ability based off a losing effort against a fighter who would lose his next 2 fights in Wlad. With hindsight Jennings just wasn't that good.

Does this mean Ortiz is garbage, no far from it, he's a legit top 5 heavyweight, his resume maybe thin but he has genuine ability and even a faded old Ortiz has to be respected for his ability. But what he isn't is this mythical monster he's made out to be, he wasn't avoided, he wasn't ducked, he took a supposedly easier path to a title and it back fired.

Lots of fighters gain popularity/fans when they lose but put in a great effort.

Honestly, he didn't really inherit a fanbase by losing, he inherited a fanbase long before when he beat Bryant
Jennings in spectacular fashion, he had always his fans.

Linares. Whyte. Parker. Khan. Gatti. Vanes to name a few. It all depends on a specific narrative any boxing fan wants to push. Everyone is guilty of this. It’s called fanboy ulterior agenda. Stop playing dumb. Fighter “X” gets promoted up to propel fighter “Z”. Linares is a big one. The guy lost to Demarco and never has really done nothing but because he knocked Lomachenko down, he gets propped up not only to make Loma look better but serve as damage control.

Very easy to spot out these mechanics. Has very different variations btw. Let’s take Mickey who is now ducking Lomachenko to save face (I find this narrative very amusing when we all know Bob wants nothing to do with this fight but should Mickey get battered by Spence becoming damaged goods, watch how Bob will change his tune). If Loma beat Mickey, you clowns denigrating Mickey would then prompt Mickey to Jupiter and back claiming it’s the greatest win in boxing history. It’s all about what narrative you want to push and it’s nothing new.

I agree with Danny Jacobs. But there's a difference between gaining fans by losing a close, competitive decision like Jacobs and getting KOd like Ortiz. Even though Ortiz was winning for most of the fight, he still got dropped several times and KOd in the end.

Arturo Gatti is the first who comes to mind.

But from currently active fighters we have: George Groves, Kell Brook, Gabriel Rosado, John Molina Jr. Those are some names that come to mind.

What would you backing Walters and Rigo against Lomachenko fall under?
