On here its common knowledge that Ottke is a fraud protected by refs and judges

he isnt taken seriously by any posters

but i feel like you dont rack up that many title defenses and retire undefeated without being a good boxer

I turned on his Reid fight just so I could see for myself not just let all the other posters make up my opinion for me

    What I came away with

Reid won but it wasnt a blow out but he did win

    Point deduction was BS

Ref warned Reid for a lot

Ottke lunged in and grabbed and used his head a lot

Ottke could box good right hand nice foot work was not good at being the initiator he had to be the one to have the opponent come to him

Ottke i dont think was protected by the ref so much as he drew fouls like a basketball player anything remotely close to a foul and he would look to the ref

I came away with the idea that Ottke is a good boxer but does act a little too much and does fouling of his own

i wanna see his more prime fights and see what his best looked like

I feel like he takes a lot of flack based on one or two fights i just want an opinion from some one who actually has watched him box

He was definitely skilled, and might have even had himself a slice of alphabet pie in any era that it was served up in...without any hometown decisions (although he wouldn't likely have had as long an uninterrupted reign).

People who call him a bum or a paper champion are often just angry fans of guys who got screwed at his expense. (Mainly Johnson and Reid).

Sorry but I don't think there are many Johnson and Reid fans on here... or anywhere really.

People get angry because they hate to a see a fighter not take risks, cherrypick and remain undefeated due to this.. sounds familiar right? Ottke isn't the first or last guy to do this.

I did. There were several close fights but outside of Reid only one that I thought he lost, Brewer I, and outside of Reid only one that is truly debatable, Tate I - you could make an argument that Ottke´s cut was opened by a punch and not by an accidental headbutt/clash of heads, that was hard to see though and I´m still not sure what caused it.

And Johnson did not get screwed. He lost fair and square.

    Think Brewer was robbed too.
Dont think Ottke was a terrible fighter,he was good.featherfisted but skilled.

He was the benefactor of some hometown cooking on a few occasions though

Ottke didn´t really cherrypick. He fought everyone available at smw at his time but his stablemate Beyer and Calzaghe - and that was both fault. He never left Germany though and didn´t take any risks in a fight. When called out on that he once said that he doesn´t fight for the fans and that he doesn´t want to end up like Ali. He does what he has to do to win and to make money. That´s it.

Oh, he was a twat - and still is. At least going by his actions in the ring and my impressions from interviews and stuff.

Ah, well, he was skilled but he wasn´t very athletic. He had excellent, very excellent judge of distance and awareness of space, was quite acurate and had endless stamina - actually he runs marathons now  He also had a good ring intelligence. He hadn´t much power and never committed to his punches out of fear for getting countered though. He had a good chin too.

He turned pro late too, at 28, but was an experienced amateuer who beat guys like Tarver, Moorer, Michaelchewski and others there.

Brewer was not robbed. Fight could have gone either way. I had Brewer up by one round. Can see the case for Ottke though.

The only thing you can really hold against him is this:
His corner got told the scorecards after every round. So, when they knew Ottke had already won the fight, he got on his bike and just avoided getting knocked out - usually after round 7 or 8 - he would lose all of those rounds making the fight closer than they actually were - Johnson fight for example. I can remember his trainer, Uli Wegener now trainer of Abraham, yelling Ottke should only act as if he punches in the last rounds. That is terrible but that was less his and more his promoters, Sauerland, fault.

    Sounds like a smart fighter

not a superior athlete or puncher but mastered his craft of a boxer

thats respectable a guy who wins for boxing and Ring IQ not power or speed

where does he stand among other Euros like Michaelchewski, Maske, Rachigani or even Calzaghe

IMO above Maske and Rocchgiani (that was my man back then :D ) but behind DM and Calzaghe. I think he would have beaten DM though, had the right style and did it already in the amateurs. Calzaghe would have outworked him.
