Usyk was knocked down and stopped by Korobov in 2016. Was the stoppage an "amateur" one or was Usyk genuinely incapable of fighting further? A video would be great if anyone has it.
In 2006. I never saw it, but back then Korobov was a beast and Usyk was a no name just starting on. The fight was stopped because Korobov was way ahead on points From some interview with Korobov talking about the fight : "The third round was stopped by the points, because I was many points ahead of him."
Dropped him in the 2nd and won a via mercy stoppage in the 3rd. As has been mentioned to far ahead by points. Korobov was very dominant around that time.
Korobov's career has been so disappointing. Beating everyone in the amateurs to getting stopped by Andy Lee.
The loss to Lee was the turning point, after that so much inactivity, promotional issues and bad luck. With a bit of luck, I think he could have made a good champ but I do think it all took it's toll on him in the end.
Really bad luck. After being so dominant he couldn't even get an Olympic medal. He even got stopped by Chris Eubank!
People still clinging to Usyk losing to elite fighters who had 250 plus fights when he was a skinny inexperienced bambino who had only been boxing a few years Korobov is one of the best amateurs I've ever seen His CV is crazy He went on a five year unbeaten run in the amateurs winning gold at the World Amateur Championships in 2005 and 2007 and European gold in 2006. He won the Russian nationals in 2003 and 2004, beating the 2000 Olympic gold medalist Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov in them IIRC but the national squad selection committee decided to send Gaydarbekov to the 2004 Olympics instead. Gaydarbekov won silver losing by 2 points in the final. From 2004-2008 among many others Korobov beat Usyk, Kovalev, Badou Jack twice, Danny Jacobs, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Ismail Sillakh, Carlos Gongora, Bakhtiyar Artayev, Alfonso Blanco, Dmitrii and Fedor Chudinov, Emilio Correa, Yordanis Despaigne, Elshod Rasulov, Mohamed Hikal, Darren Sutherland, Jarrod Fletcher etc. The scary thing is he stopped most of them on the outscored rule: Jack, Derevyanchenko, Jacobs, Usyk, Gongora, Fedor Chudinov, Sillakh, Sutherland, Fletcher were all stopped on the outscored rule Usyk fought Korobov and Porter in 2006. Usyk and Porter were like 19 and Korobov 23 Porter took up boxing aged 4, had been competing since he was 8, and had over 250 bouts when he fought Usyk Korobov finished up with an amateur record of 301-10 and turned pro two years after beating Usyk so obviously he's been boxing since he was very young too Usyk didn't even walk into a gym until he was 15 This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
There was a lot of interest about Korobov when he first turned pro. The ecpectations were very high. Ubfortunately he never came close to fulfilling them. Superb amateur though as noted.
