Problem with Steward is not that he isnt a great trainer, he clearly is. What his issue is, he does not know defense. Not "he cant teach" defense...literally he doesnt know it.

Think about every fighter he has trained. Hearns, Lewis, The Klitz, Cintron, Harris, etc...and especially Jermain Taylor. Under Burns and Nelson, he was an all around fighter, great offense off of the jab, solid defense. When he switched to Steward, his offense opened up a bit, but his defense opened up alot. After which, he switches back to Nelson and suddenly his defense is vastly improved (think Pavlik 1 to Pavlik 2).

For further proof on his lack of defensive knowledge, look no further than his commentary on defensive techniques of fighters. I remember during the Calzaghe - Hopkins fight, Manny continuously pointed to this "fact" that Bernard was looking downward when throwing his lead right...totally ignoring that what he was doing was called "tucking his chin"...which not only blunts the force of a punch on it, but also makes the target area much smaller.

Like that...yet he kept harping that Bernard was off balance (has anyone on here ever seen Bernard off balance before???) and that a simple hook would score a KD. This was just one example, but there are tons more.

How does this affect how good he would be with Williams?

Williams offense is beyond polished. His workrate is amazingly high. He attacks from all angles (remember that uppercut on Winky? LOL!). He gets good leverage when he wants on his punches. And because of the amount of punches he throws, accuracy is an afterthought...much like most high output fighters.

So what would Manny contribute? Williams needs to work on his defense...which since losing to Quintana is pretty much his biggest area of improvement. He honestly has gone from very bad, to pretty damn good in this area. George Peterson hasnt just been amazing for Williams, he has established himself as one of the better all around trainers in the game. Manny Steward would polute that.

Give him to a Cory Spinks and see what he can do with them. Williams is in very good hands!
