Has anyone got an estimate for the total number of professional boxers?

If they can't have a second job, probably less than a thousand. Most fighters don't make enough to be a pro fighter and not also have a second job. Hell, Rendall Munroe, who defended his Euro title five times and just earned a title shot, still keeps his day job as a garbageman.

As for guys who box professionally, regardless of whether they have another job, the number is probably closer to about 10 - 15 k.

 

a long time ago someone made a thread and it was assumed around 3000. if u look at boxrec for every fighter they have a ranking, like 10/300 total in that division, so if you add the total for all the divisions you will have a very good guess.

There are 17606 boxers that are deemed active by Boxrec, this does not include all of those unlicensed bouts in Mexico, where some boxers make careers.

 

Not just Mexico... There are unsanctioned bouts all over Africa and Asia.
