I think I saw that on a compilation that was for sale at a web site called "Sweet Fights" or something like that.
No but I remember reading a great article about the fight in Sports Illustrated a week later. From all reports Bennie fought a great fight, rattling King Carlos on more than one occasion forcing him to clinch. Good head movement and counterpunching throughout and was in great shape for the fight as well. I remember his manager saying how surprised Bennie was when he told him it was the start of the 15th round. "I swear he could have fought all night!" he said...
Oops, now I remember this was the rematch fight, not the original. Hard to get the upper hand on Carlos when you're on his home turf...
http://www.sweetfights.com/collections.html I've seen some of the DVDs sold at this web site, including the Monzon fights. Sorry I can't remember if it was the first or second Briscoe fight, but I remember Monzon having a lot of trouble with bad Bennie.
Really like to know if Briscoe deserved this victory. Be quite the feather in the cap of Philly fighters considering Briscoe's stablemates were able to beat Hagler fairly early in Marvin's career, a fellow ATG middleweight.
The first fight wasn't filmed to my knowledge and I have never even read a report. Boxing News, The Ring and Boxing Illustrated (for fights of May 1967) just have the result and no ringside verdict. The rematch was massively one-sided- Monzon boxed Bennie's ears off.
The rematch? He hardly won a round. He was always game and came forward throwing with bad intentions but the only time he really broke through was the 9th, when Carlos was shaken to his boots. Monzon even stood toe-to-toe later on, when he could have just stayed away in order to secure the obvious UD.
I realised that you knew the results, it's just your responses were to posters talking about the rematch. Anyway, I'm almost certain it's not available. Carlos wasn't the darling of the Argentine boxing fraternity at the time, Locche was. I'd be surprised if it was filmed at all.
Over at the boxrec.com forum, someone from Argentina posted an account of the fight. The account was translated into broken English, but it seemed to indicate that Briscoe was all over Monzon and Monzon was lucky to get the draw. Which was always the word that came out of that fight. If I have a chance I'll go search for that post myself.
All the accounts Ive heard say Briscoe deserved a close decision but the scoring system in Argentina prevented this. But I dont know whether to trust these accounts...I dont know if they are bull**** or just assuming that because it was a draw in Carlos' hometown it must have been a Briscoe win rightfully...I highly doubt many if anyone around now has seen it.
