A SD loss for Weaver that has me wondering if it was a fair call. Weaver was getting up there in age and well past his best. Was Ruddock simply the hot prospect, which gained him the decision?
I saw the fight and I thought it was a very clear decision for Ruddock. Funny thing, this was before he learned about his big left uppercut and he actually had very decent skills. I thought he really boxed nice. He had George Chuvalo in his corner and whatever happened after that, Chuvalo was no longer his trainer and he abandoned his skills in lieu of the big uppercut. i have it on vhs.....i thought ruddock won.......ruddock was very small 215 lbs......weaver really rocked ruddock in the 5th round......
Never seen it, heard Ruddock should've won UD though. It was after that fight that Razor started foregoing his jab for the power game instead...before then he was more of a stick 'n' mover, being like so many a big fan of Ali.
They were building up a Smith--Ruddock fight and the Weaver fight was a tuneup bout with a name opponent. Ruddock was hurt badly in the fight but survived. Arguello was the announcer and thought Weaver should've got the decision. With that in mind, I think it was one of those oddball bouts you get sometimes where the guys at ringside see and feel things that just aren't captured by the tv camera's. And as such, their scoring seems strange.
