Has anyone looked as good as Ortiz and been so disappointing?

I mean, the guy in the ring looks like an absolute beast when he's doing what he does well - he moves very quickly, he looks huge for the weight class he's in, he throws sharp hard punches and combinations, he's got a reasonable defense when he's actually using it.

But all in all, he lets his guard drop, he slugs it out with people and then he decides he's had enough and gives in.

I'm not going to call him a coward or anything but **** he must be frustrating for his trainer, the guy looks like someone who should be competitive against anyone in there yet he's getting spanked by basic no namers like Lopez and Maidana.

He's a huge waste of talent/potential IMHO. It's disappointing. He has so much potential. With a stronger mind and a better trainer he could've been terrific.

All those physical assets mean nothing if he doesn't have the mentality and heart when the going gets tough

:deal Toss in Ricardo Williams as well. They both came along around the same time. Future looked bright as hell for both! Sadly they didn't have the determination to go with that talent.

Victor Ortiz needs Pedro Diaz in his corner.

Not the same boat. Vargas had two huge wins over Ike and Winky. He was just bested badly by Tito at an early age. How he looked before and after the Tito fights were like night and day.

    ortiz has some tools.

he has power. solid speed. some boxing skills.

but the guy is kinda stupid. he also seems mentally weak.

and the reason i say that is when i see him fight , he always seems to do the wrong thing on different occassions.

example: against someone he probably should overpower , he'd end up boxing.

against someone he probably should box , he'd end up slugging with them.

he always seems to have the wrong gameplan and use the wrong tactics even in victory.

Completely agree, that's why I hate when people say things like "Lara vs Cotto" Lara is good but ur basically throwing him in the lions Den too damn early

IDK, I think Lara vs. Cotto would be good one to make. The thing with Vargas, he had too much machismo to trade with someone like Tito. Lara's slicker style should keep him from the type of damage that could shorten a career. And Cotto is still a relatively small JrMW. Lara vs. Cotto is a 50-50 IMHO.
