Has anyone noticed what a great idea it is that Calzaghe and Roy are self promoting?

What a great idea for two legends to realize they don't need any of the scum bag promoters out there. I wish Ali and Frazier could have figured that out. Hell Mike Tyson didn't need anybody 90% of his fights. When you reach the perennial of your marketing career, why give money away!!! Hat's off to Jones and Calzaghe

    Its good and bad.

There are a lot of bad promoters out their taking to much money of their fighters for my liking and these promoters losing out when their boxers go it alone is good in my opinion but there are some good trustworthy promoters out there who have their fighters best interests at heart and i think it will be a bit sad to have a promoter build up and make a fighter only to be binned of when that fighter starts making some serious money in huge fights.

It will also be detrimental for a fighters career if he goes it alone and has to sacrifice time in the gym because he is working on promoting his upcoming fight.

There are a lot of twatty promoters out there but promoters are very important to boxing and are needed. Fighters are fighters and promoters are business men who know how to promote a fight and get fans, and more importantly fans who don't follow boxing so much, to watch a fight. Its good that a boxer may get a higher percentage of money if he self promotes as the boxer is the most important person and deserves the lions share but theres a chance that the fight won't generate enough money as the self promoting fighter is not actually good at promoting and it results in less fans watching and the fighter actually coming away with less money than if he had an actual promoter promoting the fight.

I think the undecard is weak because both guys are well aware that they're selling the fight on their own.

Undercard or not this fight figures to do big bucks.

I'm just the opposite. I look at it like this. Say you have someone who pays your way through school, takes care of everything on your way up, then once you get your degree and get a great paying job, you tell that person to take a hike, and dont let them recoup their investment.

Remember, if it wasnt for someone like Arum making that investment at the beginning, Floyd Mayweather would be the most physically gifted parking attendant in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Typically, on the whole, a promoter loses money on a fighters first 20 fights. It's only AFTER he builds them up into a tv attraction that he can recoup the investment, and hopefully turn a profit. That profit then allows him to take a chance on 20 other guys who never turn into anything.

Promoting is a business, not philanthropy.

Being a fighter is a business too and if you can make more money by ditching your promoter, then you owe it to yourself to do it, unless you feel emotionally attached to your promoter and decide to give him hand-outs.

Simply put: HBO boys Roy Jones and Joe Calzaghe are in the position to pull it off as they already have the exclusive TV contract and are well known at HBO Sports executives. Kessler, Andrade, Cunningham, Malignaggi, Gamboa etc. wouldn't be able to pull that off, they need the promoters as mainly promoters are making the contracts with the TVs for a given date.

Jones-Calzaghe is special, because it's not that GBP wanted Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Joel Casamayor to put on the television, this time HBO IS THE PROMOTER, Warren and King wasn't needed. HBO did everything, Jones and Calzaghe barely had to agree on the 50-50 terms. And still, the result is shitty undercard for a big PPV show, and the promotion is solely built on the TV, mainly on 24/7.

Fighters not being in the driver's seat at HBO or Showtime wouldn't be able to pull that off. That's why they have promoters. They depend on them.
