Yeah, he's had the treatment on here very occasionally. It's fact that the Welsh are the most underrated fight country p4p though. I'd say they're probably the greatest nation in fistic history based upon population.
Yes, technically he was the first World champion from Wales but the flyweight division was very much in its infancy so I’m not sure there was a “world champion” per se since the Americans didn’t recognize it. Ended up not being able to make the weight anymore then got wounded in the war so had to retire very young. Beat some good fighters like Joe Symonds (who gave Wilde hell), Criqui, Harrison, Mansfield so for that era had a lot of quality concentrated into a rather low count of fights/career length. The only guy he didn’t pin a loss on was Tancy Lee, another who’s overlooked but was good enough to take Wilde’s “0” and beat guys like Symonds too. As McGrain said, Wales history is fantastic and overlooked. Wilde, Driscoll, Welsh, Calzaghe, Jones, Winstone is a hell of a lineup. That early 20th century of Welsh boxing has been one of my favorites to read up on. Plenty on Wilde, Driscoll, Welsh and the mountain fighters and booths but I’ve not found anything too extensive on Jones.
