Has anyone read an explanation as to why Dick Tiger tapped his gloves together so often?

Just a habit I'll suppose is the boring answer but you never know.

Lots of fighters have nervous tics or little idiosyncrasies. Some guys if you pay close attention (and while I’ve noticed this before I’m at a loss to think of any particular fighters as examples now) will tap their left eyebrow with their left glove repeatedly … comes from being taught that in the gym as a reminder to keep their left hand up against the right (probably after being victimized by a right somewhere along the way).

Max Baer had the thing where he’d wipe his gloves on his trunks repeatedly — in Cinderella Man they picked up on it and had Max doing it, but somehow seemed to interpret it as a gesture of him being dismissive of Braddock or as if he was sort of flipping him off. But I’ve seen Max do it in other fights. Just a habit of sorts.

Some guys will disengage and ‘take a walk,’ sort of step back and then walk around a bit like a stroll on the street, one foot over the other unlike how a boxer usually moves. It’s sort of a reset thing I think. Almost a ‘time out,’ and it’s surprising how often most opponents will allow it.

Not surprising given how he was a quintessential rhythm fighter. Almost like he beat the drums of war.

    Hi Buddy.
Along a similar theme, Carpentier did something very strange, he would wipe the inside if his gloves on his thigh, and he did this many times during a round, check it out.
    stay safe Saint, chat soon.

Joe also tapped himself in the head. Just a routine I reckon.

New thread: boxers that often adjusted their shorts. Frank Sanchez and Kenny Norton come to mind. Were they afraid they'll fall, or was it a ploy? A stutter of rhythm.

Larry Holmes had a habit of hitting guys in the mouth with his jab.

Oh, one of those “He’s never fought me twice” guys like Thor in that Avengers movie, haha.

Anyone he fought twice, that presumably means he didn’t fight someone else who did get a shot. And then you (or someone else) would talk about how he ducked them.

Guys like Weaver (he actually did fight him again, albeit in his ‘second career’) and Witherspoon should have done more when they had Larry in front of them.

As for Norton, he was due a rematch when he got wiped out by Earnie Shavers (whom Larry fought twice) in one round … so the guy who won (in impressive, decapitating fashion) got the rematch.

I’d say Larry did just fine. Until Spinks, he beat every guy ever put in front of him.
