Imagine if Tyson had this sort of work ethic 365 days a year.

He was around in the 40's-50's. A boat load of PED's is very likely.

Angelo Dundee wrote this "Charlie (Goldman) was having him (Marciano) do an exercise where he bent his knees completely down, almost touching the floor with his butt, and them came up punching."

But if not for them, how would we know that Rocky ran 10-15 miles every day, and backwards down hills, when he wasn't busy punching 300-lb heavybags to the roof of the gym?

He ate one meal a day.

Without personal eyes-on, I take reports of training regimes with a healthy grain of salt, especially with legends; for some reason, there's a tendency to make them even more legendary, as if their accomplishments themselves aren't enough. Bruce Lee is a good example. He claimed to be able to hold a 70-lb barbell with extended arms straight in front of him in a static hold. Difficult, but entirely possible. His one-inch punch could knock a man off his feet. Also entirely possible. He could knock a 200-lb heavy bag off its chains with a side kick. Sure, why not ... he was a strong, skilled, well-conditioned guy, no question.

Over time, the 70-lb barbell, according to posters on various sites, has become a 100-lb barbell ... then 150 lbs. Then it became a 50-lb dumbbell held horizontally out to the side (picture a lateral raise), then 100 lbs. His one inch punch could knock a man 25 feet across the room. The 200 lb heavy bag became 300, 400, 500 lbs. Apparently the ability to levitate was just on the horizon when he died.

Could a 180lb boxer run 15 miles a day? Why not? I've known/seen marathoners in the 200lb range run respectable times ... I just don't know about keeping up that level of work along with all the other stuff (sparring, bag work, gym exercises) that go along with championship-level training. With prolonged aerobic exercise, after a certain point the body starts cannibalizing lean muscle tissue. Possible? Anything's possible, and I don't believe he was involved with whatever PEDs were around at the time. Maybe he was just a genetic marvel. Frankly, I think it's irrelevant; he was a great fighter. All we need to know ...

My favourite thing about Marciano was his intensity as fight approached once he was champion. I read that he refused to shake hands with anyone. I read that he refused to ride in a car for any reason in the final week unless it was fight related business. I hear he was difficult, hostile. I love that. I hope it's true.
