Current OPBF middleweight champion with a 13-0-0, 12 KO record, made his fourth defence of the title yesterday by destroying the current Japanese middleweight champion in one round, who by the way had never been stopped before. Apparently he's a wrecking ball, by only looking at his record, but does he have what it takes to become atleast an alphabetic champion?
Figured I'd bump this since it looks like Sato's getting a shot at Sturm next. Are there any firsthand reports on him?
A couple of reports: http://www.ring-japan.com/ori07/ori070318-2.htm http://www.ring-japan.com/ori08/ori080618.htm http://insideboxing.com/Espanol/Hisao/koji_sato.htm (in Spanish only)
Yes there is, it's called the OPBF and is a little bit like the NABF used to be here- a respected regional belt and a logical stepping stone for anyone looking to get themselves a world title shot. The majority of Japanese champs/championship contenders hold it at one point or another on their way up, and Sato falls under that group as well. He's defended it 4 or 5 times now. Winning the Japanese title carries a bit of weight in the lower classes, too. Nobuo Nashiro, Daisuke Naito, Koki Kameda, Takefumi Sakata, are all either current or former beltholders that held either the Japanese or OPBF titles before getting their world shot, for example.
If Sturm is fighting him i would be very surprised if he is decent. Unless the German Health and Safety group havn't done there homework.
