Has Billy Joe Saunders ever been in an exciting fight?

Great technician but I turned off after the 4th round last night confident of the UD outcome and more than happy not to sit through another 8 rounds of BJS.

 

It usually means someone is very good. He’ll earn a bit less money because of it but if he can make a good living fighting this way and taking less punishment then fair play to him. The sport is about hit and not get hit.

Anyway, last night he’d have got rid of many opponents I think. Some of his shots were beautiful, particularly the uppercut. Murray is a tough man. Murray played a part in that fight being dull anyway he hasn’t been in a good fight for years because he just can’t pull the trigger. Abraham was there for the taking and he just couldn’t let his shots go. He just seems to survive in fights.

 

Murray is the world champion of getting the most from limited talent.

BJS might be in boring fights but baby Eubanks is a bum, BJS would play with him in there.

 

Remember all that talk that the reason he was on the undercard of that YouTube fight was to introduce him to a casual audience? I can guarantee not one person tuned in last night after seeing him for the first time then.

 

Yes - Ryder/Lee/Eubank. But not for several years. Since the Lemieux fight (which was a great performance but very boring) it's been utter dross. Hence Saunders now has a Friday night slot.

 

The real problem last night was that Martin Murray was given another chance. If Adam Smith had any quality control over Hearn, he would have vetoed it. As far as the promoter is concerned BJS moving from Queensbury to Matchroom has basically meant that the Murray match happened 2 years later than it would have if he’d stayed with Warren. Having Smith and Macklin trying to tell us that BJS is Sugar Ray Leonard and Martin Murray is Roberto Duran just makes things worse.

 

He absolutely did not do a number on Andy Lee Jurgen. Barely, and I mean barely, deserved the win, even with the big round he had.. Many a champion held on to their title doing less than what Lee did that night. If Lee was marketable he would likely have too.

BJS did have one aggressive, "exciting" performance. I can't remember the opponent, but Bill practically steamrollered the ref out of the way to get the ko with the opponent helpless on the ropes??? Maybe you can recall the guy?
(BJS has Great skills through no doubt about it.).

 

Think my memory is going as I had BJS winning that fight without too much turbulence that night and that may be because of that big round. Apart from the Lemieux and Eubank fights, there has barely been anything to get excited about.

Must have knocked out a pudding.

 

I thought Saunders going to Matchroom would boost his career. Would rather Saunders and Smith go at it instead of Smith and Canelo.

 

The Spike win was a very good performance. Completely boxed his head off. Spike survived in that fight thanks to some very brave corner work sending him out each round to take a pasting.

If you enjoy that slick, pot shotting style of boxing (I very much do) then you’d have enjoyed a number of his fights. If you only like watching a good ding-dong Gatti-Ward round 9 job then he’s not for you.

Last night was boring, he didn’t drop a round but he didn’t step through the gears either. He’s lost a fraction of that sharpness that made him a threat to anyone. Time waits for nobody and he’s missed his chance imo...along with the weight.

 

He only beat Eubank 7-5.

I think the young lion Christopher would do BJS in a rematch, through his sheer relentless aggression.
