Joe is undefeated. Top fighters avoided him like the plague. He is not like Mayweather who avoided the top fighters like Cotto and Margarito.

hate him or love him, his record speaks for itself.

Both are greats of this generation and both are hated. Every great fighter gets his share of hate even after retirement. Look at the hate that surrounded Roy Jones in his prime and Lennox Lewis just to name two recent ones. This is nothing new.

Joe wasn't running away from opponents at the end of his career or 'retiring' at age 32 to avoid matchups like the other guy. Just ask Kessler. Or "Mini-Tyson" Lacy. Or Hopkins.

I've said this before and will say it again: PBF retired before the Cotto-Margo fight because he knew what was going to happen and didn't want to get called out another time by Margarito after Tony beat Miguel. PBF also wanted nothing to do with Williams.

    45-0 > 39-0.

Joe reigned as SMW champ for a decade, or about the same length of time as PBF's entire career. Joe was in the game before PBF came along, and he's still in it after Track Man quit the sport to duck tough fights. Joe "bookends" Mayweather.

    Not for me TL.
Floyd truly makes my skin crawl, even just on an ESB avatar shot.
Ive never got the same horrible vibes from another fighter as him in all my days.
I cringe the moment i see his pic.
    Its weird.

Based on quality of opposition 39-0 > 45-0.
Mayweather won titles in multiple divisions AND faced better opponents.
Jesus Christ, I never thought I would "defend" Mayweather in this forum :|

PS: To answer the thread's question, I'd say yes, Joe is getting much hate simply because of his hardcore fans. Although I dislike his fighting style, I have nothing but respect for the man. But to see "fans" of his claim he's greater than i.e. Lennox Lewis goes way too far!

Mayweather's level of competetion and his dominance over them far surpass Calzaghe's accomplishments.

Lacy (decent fighter but nothing special but Calz won in very impressive fashion as he should have, Lacy then when life or death with Peter Manfredo ahaha)
Kessler (pretty good, still unproven though)
B-Hop (best victory on his resume even though it could've gone either way)
Jones JR (way past it, any decent LH would KO Jones at this point)

I'm sorry that just doesn't add up to:

    Genero Hernandez
    Diego Corrales
    Jose Luis Castillo x 2
Zab Judah ( I know, but in comparison to Lacy Zab will go down as a far greater fighter so if you give Calz Lacy you gotta give Mayweather Judah at least and a hanful of others that i'll leave out for argument sake who were better than Lacy too)
    De La Hoya
    Hatton

It doesn't matter that Floyd retired without facing every welterweight out there as he shoulda never been fighting at Welterweight anyways.
