Your assesment is accurate. Cotto looked like a completely new fighter in there. His movement was good, and his jab and combinations are like hammers with great speed.
I once saw a fight that made Valuev the jabbing giant look like a power punching knockout artist. Doesn't make it true. It was just another terrible mismatch.
Don't feel bad I had Gomez going 12 too. I thought him being in there with Middleweights would help, boy was I wrong.
And he looked slow against Ben Tackie. Gomez is like molasses for a welter. Maybe Cotto's speed has improved, but I doubt it. More likely, it's just the comparison from fighting a particularly slow fighter.
