Has Cotto had a lot of luck 147 and up?

After his first 3 loses, he got an immediate title shot in his next fight. He has beaten 3 fighters who have dealt with injuries in their title fights: Martinez (knee), Foreman (knee), Margarito (eye). Now I'm not saying he would beat them all anyways, Foreman he certainly would, but he did benefit from Margarito and Martinez not being healthy. He also had two career jackpots by fighting Floyd and Manny. Also, his fight with Mosley could have easily been a draw. Don't get me wrong, what he has done in his career is impressive and he is a top fighter. I just don't think he has done anything truly "great" since his title run at 140. Not unless you overlook some things.

A well managed career with a few exceptions.
Before Pacquiao he had a novice train him.
Mayorga fight on PPV was pointless. (Mayorga only made 50k:lol:)
And of course Austin Trout. I personally feel that they overlooked him.

Yes pure luck. He also got lucky of getting a beating from Paul Williams Cotto avoided that fight.

    * Beating Quintana in the manner that he did was pretty impressive.

    * Given that Mosley would go on to handle Margarito in the manner that he did, Cotto's win (I had it close but clear for him) looks pretty good.

    * I thought he shaded a decent contender/titleholder in Clottey, which is a pretty good result coming off a hard loss to Margo the first time.

    * Speaking of Margo, Cotto did well to adjust and reverse the result against an opponent whom many on the site thought had his number, damaged or no. Plus, there's still doubt in the mind of a lot of people about whether or not Margo's win over him was truly valid, given the hand wraps scandal that emerged in AM's next fight.

*Yeah, Martinez was damaged goods, but a lot of people had written Cotto off completely following the loss to Trout. Very few people thought Cotto would fight as well as he did, even if his opponent was on the slide.

So yes, there may have been a bit of luck...but there's some steak to go along with the sizzle.

To be fair you do knee-d a lot of luck on your side sometimes in this game.

Wish we got to see the roach h trained version v's trout and floyd. I think roachs adaptations away from Pedro's movement based style, that has cotto set up his punches in a more seamless manner would've had him performing better against Floyd and trout.

Those are all good points, and I must admit that his win over Quintana was very good, especially given that he would beat Williams 2 fights later, however Quintana is a hot and cold fighter.

Yeah, he was always a bit inconsistent, but it was a solid win over a then undefeated contender. Plus, Cotto turned southpaw to beat him, so he scores style points for that. :D

I just think that he's done reasonably well for himself, especially given that he's been written off completely on more than one occasion.

Overall I agree Cotto's career and greatness have been manufactured, however I think this of all the top fighters in the game today. I also think that Cotto made the most of his luck and ran with it. Given the same circumstances to some of his peers I don't think they would have had as much luck. Cotto himself is still a legit tough as nails fighter.

He made an absolute fool out of Mayorga and the Margo performance was his career best imo.
Thats the Cotto Floyd beat , yet some folks like to say he was shot.

Yes he has had a lot of luck.

But fighting Pacquiao practically training himself and fighting Trout without proper conditioning (he had no power) and strategy are his worst career moves. Pedro is a good trainer but his boxing AND strength & conditioning style doesn't match with Cotto.

He shouldn't have fought Pac at 145. And should've hired Roach sooner.

Cotto has done very well above 140. Won titles at 147, 154 and 160.

Fighters that are "tough as nails", don't get known for taking knees in their biggest fight.
