Crawford has Spence ans Canelo who are arguably better than anyone Whtaker ever faced. Pernell has JCC(draw) amd McGrit. Pernell lost ever big fight. Thoughts?
I had ODLH fight a draw I think that fight is debatable enough to argue either way. The other fights I agree on though.
It would be an interesting match as both were southpaws and lightening fast at 135. Whitaker of course spent most of his career in that division while Crawford was only there for a brief time when he was young and coming up.
Pernell never lost a round against Chavez. I am a staunch Chavez fan career-wise, (not so much personally wise cause as you know the two times I met him he was not very friendly apart form signing autographs for me, but never with a smile nor even saying thank you when my dad told him God bless you, campeon, Whitaker was not friendly either when i met him, so I have no dog as far as my sympathies being with one or the other except that Chavez IS Hispanic like me) and his fight with De La Hoya was close enough, His loss to Ramirez was a robbery. This is countered by the way his first win over Rivera was also a robbery, and the second fight you could also argue for Rivera. I am not as big a fan of Whitaker as Max Kellerman and in fact I dont think anyone is. He was a great fighter whose fights were not boring like some say, but drugs did their harm on him and I cannot help but think how much greater he'd been without the drugs At one time I thought that a dream match between him and Duran was a 50.50 proposition at Lightweight. Duran the hitter versus Whitaker the nimble counter puncher, In fact if Esteban De Jesus beat Duran basically using a similar style to Whitaker's, who knows? But I think Crawford may have surpassed him because Crawford keeps dominating his opponents, is undefeated at an older age and at bigger weights than Whitaker dominated. Ok, I know Pee Wee dominated the great Argentine Julio Cesar Vazquez, who you can argue deserves to be in the hall of fame but that was a one off. Whitaker began slipping in the Welterweight division, probably because by then he was high on cocaine. I dont know, This is a highly debatable point. But I think both have great scalps on their record and Canelo will be in the Hall of Fame too...sooo?
Both of them dominated the divisions they boxed in for about a whole decade. Very few in history can make that claim. Both had almost super natual ability compared to their peers.
I don't know enough about Crawford4s runs at 135 and 140 (besides Gamboa and Postol) to rank him with confidence. I don't think he has anything like the Whitaker's performance against Chavez, which should have been a win, though.
