I posted this in the general forum a while back and it didn't get much interest, so I thought I'd start it up in here to see if there is any more opinions. David Haye has said "Once the Hayemaker lands it's all over". At CW except for a few occasions this has been true. However he has been into the later rounds a few times and come through dodgy spells against Fragomeni + Mormeck. He's had stamina issues in the past and the jury's still out on his chin. If he lands the Hayemaker against 16-17 stone fighters and it doesn't have the desired effect, is he good enough to go on the back foot for 12 rounds and keep that chin from getting tagged?
I think he has the skills to outbox someone for twelve rounds, plus the pace in heavyweight today isn't exactly blistering, his conditioning is great and I'd expect him to have a lot more stamina at heavy. If he realises he can't knock someone out, I hope he puts his guard up however, cos his chin is a little weak.
Haye will only take the oppurtunity to finish if it is really there. The rest of the time he will outbox the opponent with his hand speed. If the opportunity never presents itself he will just out box them for 12 rounds. He was a world class amateur and is probably the best "technical boxer" at H/W right now.
Agreed - with the possible exception of Wlad. I think the chin will improve at heavy due to being allowed to have more muscle etc, and lets not forget, he was KO'd mainly because of punching himself out and underestimating a guy with a puncher's chance, as all Billy Graham fighters have.
Except for reflexes and his overhand straight right and head movement, wheres the technical skills from him?
Have you watched him fight. He can switch hit, fight on the inside, Great counter puncher, can dictate the pace of the fight. Anymore?
well he is good at using his footwork and strentgh to get out of that situation. Maybe this is something he will not be able to do at heavy. Still 225lbs of muscle is gonna be stronger than peters 250lbs of fat.
If he wants true heavyweight success he will need a plan B and be able to box to a decison win. Theres always going to be guys u cannot knock out. Lewis had to use his plan B on Holyfield, Tua etc.
I believe Haye could jab and move his way to victory over a large number of heavyweights. Most of them barely have a plan A.
Haye uses an RJJ-like left handed flick jab which is hellishly fast whilst in the meantime leaving his left hand low to entice his opponent to throw. Haye honestly believes that even if his opponent fires first his speed will allow him to land before them which so far IT HAS. He done it to Maccarinelli whos fast himself and would easily be the fastest HW. I honestly think Haye feels it will actually be easier to beat most top HW's than the top cruiserweights because of this.
