Calum Smith looks likes he can go all the way but clearly now needs to be given a proper test. He's been fighting Eastern European doorman types for too long now. Last nights fight he was in was pathetic. He would have learned nowt from that & the only positive he could take is that he didn't get injured. It would have been better if he went around America for a month sparring in the gyms compared with training for a month to beat up someone 1 & a half stone lighter who is just there to survive.
Callum has a big step up in next fight fighting a guy who has came closer to winning a world title than Groves ever has. This will give us all a great gauge of we're he is at. I would like to see Callum move head a little too, but he has good footwork that helps with lack of head movement. If he were to fight Groves tomorrow I would fancy him to best Groves, but leave it 12 months and it will be an easy night for Smith.
Put him in with a puncher or a decent boxer with a jab and watch Smith fall apart. They need to take things slowly with him.
i agree to an extent. I just think this is perhaps the biggest problem facing british prospects. I personally think thats why 99% of them fall short when they finally get to challenge for world honours, because the actual world title fight becomes a huge jump from the previous bozos they've been bowling over. I dont think they get legitimate tests. Granted Smith is still relatively young, but if they are quick enough to mention him in the same breath as George Groves, then unfortunately they are open for these criticisms
