floyd by himself does not bring enough excitement to attract the serious numbers. its true that many fans want to see him lose but they want to see him lose to their favorite fighter not just for the sake of seeing him lose. beating him means you have beat one of the best and that is a pretty feather on anyones favorite fighters hat. without a fighter with a big following to put against him, most fans would be indifferent. the spurs suffered from the same problem, even though they played great b-ball, they lacked the excitement to attract the casual fan. its not the science of boxing that attracts the masses, its the drama, and unfortunately floyd provides more drama outside the ring than he does inside it.
mayweather baldomir wasn't sold out. only 9,000+ in attendance a lot of empty seats. i'll never forget that fight coz it was my birthday and i almost fell asleep on the undercard (guerrero salido) and then the main event put me to sleep!!
Well if he would have kept the momentum he had in 2007, he might have become a fighter capable of selling out arenas. Floyd became the face of boxing after his KO of Hatton. Shame he retired when he did But honestly, no fighter in America is going to sell out 20,000 plus seat arenas.
They don't hold fights in venues like that ... the most you get in the US for a big even is about 17-20k and Floyd has sold out an arena like that. I can argue with anyone here ... if Mayweather fought at the "big house" the stadium for the U of M football team ... he can sell out that venue ... which holds over 100k fans. Let me say that Margarito vs Mosley did 20k at the staples center ... but thats a rarity _
im pretty sure arreola vs klit is going to sell out staples center and its not because he is so good or klit has such a big american following.
There has already been a thread like this ... if Floyd fought at Michigan Stadium or at Ford Field ... he would sell that Venue out ... but we all know that the money is in those casinos ... where you can charge 1500 + per ringside seat and make a killing.
:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl what you smoking man, 100,000 people, **** You Floyd huggers are something else man.:rofl
No one, except pac in the Phillipines is selling 100,000 seats. Why the **** would you go if you where in row 40 or above? Why doesnt' he do it then?
You might be right. A small town with no major league sports franchise might rally around a fighter like Kelly Pavlik. Matter of fact, the Spinks fight in St. Louis stills the record for a indoor arena attendance. I attribute alot of that to a great pr blitz and the fact that St. Louis never had a title fight of that magnitude.
I think the small town might help but I think it is more becuase he stayed grounded and close to his roots and fans. Look at Hatton, Calzaghe and Pac, all three are similar in that they stayed home and stayed normal guys, as much as possible at least.
