No. Jones fought opponents ranging from 154 to 226 lbs., whereas Mayweather fought opposition from 130 lbs to 154. Mayeather only covered a 25 lb spread compared to Jones' eventual competition against opponents 60 lbs north of his debut at jr. middleweight.
No, Unifying a division is much harder than skipping thru divisions and picking the weakest champion to fight
The problem with RJJ's legacy is that he fought in a division(s) that were weak in his time. Early on, he fought and beat the best but later the fighters were just not there. This is a hard one but based on what i just mentioned i'm going to have to say Floyd is on top. Very close though
I really don't know how one could possibly rank Mayweather ahead. RJJ convincingly beat Hopkins and schooled the then current pfp number one in Toney. Later in his career, he schooled the decent (he had done well against Holy) although not great heavyweight champ in John Ruiz. It was the fashion in which he won his biggest fights. He was nigh on untouchable at his best. Floyd has never been that dominant.
Roy Jones Jr, is one of the most accomplished fighters ever. So the answer is no, Roy Jones had a better amateur career and he has had a better professional career.
someone make this poll in 1 month and 75% will vote no. he's not even that close when you really think about it.
1. hopkins was nothing then 2. toney was NEVER p4p #1 3. RJJ is ahead b/c of the fashion he won his biggest fights? compare: RJJ- UD over Toney, Hopkins- biggest fights Mayweather- KO 10 Corrales, TKO 10 Hatton
Hatton and Corrales compared to Hopkins and Toney? Virgill Hill - KO6, better than either Hatton or Corrales.
you are a bigger ****** than I thought :rofl and so was Roy. They were both green, and he STILL whooped his ass. Yes he was. Toney has then what PBF is now, lb4lb considered the best. Corrales + Hatton combined don't come close to the quality of a Toney or Hopkins. Has anyone ever KO'd or even hurt Hopkins? Toney? :hi: PBF against DLH: split decision and ran like a little ***** 1st half of the fight. PBF against Judah: losing first 1/3 of the fight till Judah collapsed mentally as he always does PBF against Baldo: call the Olympic Committee...we have the next Carl Lewis! PBF against Castillo I: lost, but yet got a gift decision. So, how many fights did Roy run or ***** out or "lose" when he was 30 or younger? :yep Let me guess....you gonna bring up "quality of competition", amirite? because certainly the Brusseles and Baldo's and Mitchells of the world are MUCH better than the Gonzalez, and Halls of the world, right?
I believe that Ring had Whitaker #1 in the world, while some other publications had moved Toney to #1 since Whitaker had begun to decline and Toney was beating top level opposition.
http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine%27s_Annual_Ratings:_Pound_For_Pound--1990s Toney was not P4P #1.
Jones' has notable victories over Toney, Hopkins and Hill. If you want, count Ruiz as a notable win. I prefer the wins of Mayweather: Castillo x2, Corrales, Hatton, De la Hoya, G. Hernandez. And wins over guys like Zab Judah and Jesus Chavez are better than wins over Who del Valle and David Telesco.
