So having seen a number of excellent posts extolling the virtues of the 'journeyman' boxer and their importance to the sport as they repeatedly take on boxing's brightest talents at short notice and for often meagre pay I thought I'd dedicate a thread to these unsung heroes. So whilst Canastota might not come a calling we can offer these fearless warriors the best thing we can offer: a place on the ESB Professional Opponent Hall of Fame wherein we immortalise their legendary testicular fortitude. @Serge I believe you have a number of candidates you'd like to put forward to get proceedings underway.
Kris 'Mr Reliable' Laight had his 300th fight in 2018. Amazing achievement. http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/216597
Good stuff, I like the title too. Marion Wilson Wilson was only stopped once in 57 fights (on a cut), and 25 of his 57 opponents were undefeated. Only fought one opponent who had a losing record (in his sixth fight) and didn't retire until he was 51 years of age. He didn't even turn pro until he was 32. His opponents total records were 1127-146-14, averaging 20-3 and he fought the likes of: Ray Mercer Andrew Golota Hasim Rahman Oliver McCall Shannon Briggs Oleg Maskaev Tony Thompson Ike Ibeabuchi Zeljko Mavrovic Kirk Johnson Larry Donald Ezra Sellers Frans Botha Jeremy Williams Orlin Norris Tyrell Biggs Carl Williams Derrick Jefferson Corey Sanders David Izon Jimmy Thunder Paea Wolfgramm Vaughn Bean Mike Hunter Greg Page Faruq Saleem Terrance Lewis Obed Sullivan Among others http://boxrec.com/boxer/4537
Tony Booth 52-105-9 Fought David Haye Johnny Nelson Dereck Chisora James Cook Enzo Maccarinelli Ralf Rocchigiani Troy Ross Victor Cordoba Ole Klemetsen Montell Griffin Franco Wanyama Eddy Smulders Tortsen May Michael Sprott Ovil McKenzie Omar Sheika Martin Rogan Crawford Ashley Dean Francis Rob Norton Bruce Scott Maurice Core And he fought some of them multiple times And a whole load of other undefeated or well thought of prospects and Euro and domestic level fighters and often at late notice http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/4216
Yeah it's crazy but you don't get these weird boxing fans concerned about this guy paying his mortgage. Only the rich overpayed, overhyped fighters.
This is a really great thread. I'm pretty much a casual (by your guys' standards- not my family/friends) so I never knew any of these figthers. But, you're right, they're amazing people and deserve much credit. I'm glad you guys are educating fans like me. These are the types of threads that make me come to this forum.
Deon Nash Not legendary but for a guy who’s only had 19 fight he’s fought some good opponents both the charlo brothers (jamall twice) plus Danny Garcia. This article about him is an interesting read https://www.props.co/GabeOppenheim/where-in-the-world-is-deon-nash-7a82f
The Legend: Zack Page 21-45-2, with 7 wins by KO, 5 losses by KO This list starting with the most recent fight, moving backward. Cedric Agnew, 2012 Rakhim Chakhkiev Francesco Pianeta Mike Perez --- Tyson Fury Manuel Charr Luis Ortiz Juan Carlos Gomez Kevin McBride Yoan Pablo Hernandez --- Seth Mitchell Kubrat Pulev Mike Perez Michael Sprott Francisco Palacios Guillermo Jones Lou Del Valle, 2006 Loaded with other recognizable journeyman-types as well. The stretch between Hernandez and Fury were all back-to-back, all in a six month stretch in 2010. Wow.
