Has Hopkins' legacy taken a hit after tonight?

    well, pavlik was nothing special to being with. his two notable wins are against two fighters that have been koed several times, miranda and taylor. (miranda was just koed). as someone said though, hop already had a legacy. this is just like hopkins beating tarver. tarver wasnt anything special either, but because hopkins was coming off a loss, like he did against pavlik, he shocked everybody by dominating both tarver and pavlik.

    Not considering the circumstances leading up to the Hopkins-Pavlik fight. Bernard was 43 yrs old and almost no one gave him a chance to win that fight.

    Kelly was hyped to mythical proportions after coming back to stop Taylor after a near TKO 2 loss. Bhop shut this young, undefeated lion out 12 rounds to 0. 12-0 at 43 yrs old vs a young, unbeaten HBO fighter speaks for itself. If anything, Hopkins laid the blueprint and also mentally destroyed Kelly after that fight.

    Tonight is Sergio Martinez's night. He has to pick the title defense that gives him the most money. He could say **** Pavlik and defend the 154 lb title against Williams, provided a mandatory doesn't get in the way.

    I thought he bested PWill, but Sergio may want to avenge that L on his record. He deserves a big payday no matter which way he goes.

    Yes it suffers of course. Pavlik wasn't what he was made out to be. THe value of that win is depreciating with each new fight.

    What was Pavlik made out to be? Martinez is an amazing talent with sensational tools - and Pavlik, one of the clumsiest oafs in boxing, was OUTBOXING Martinez for 4 or so rounds with blood streaming everywhere. That's ridiculous when you think about it. Get real, dude.

    As far as his actual legacy is concerned, I don't think it's really affected Hopkins that much. After all he has his wonderful reign at 160lbs followed by his great win over Tarver to fall back on. Hopkins isn't in the same position as say Calzaghe, who in my opinion needed Kessler and Lacy to go on to achieve great things in order to solidify his resume.

    Nonetheless, I do feel as though Hopkins win over Pavlik is overrated by many people here. Pavlik, unfortunately, was never the monster that people made him out to be. If anything Martinez beat a better version of Pavlik than BHop. Pavlik had the height, reach and weight advantage over Martinez. He was fighting at a weight where he's been used to knocking people out and he was still horribly outboxed.

    I also don't buy into the notion that Hopkins ruined Pavlik and created some kind of master plan on how to beat him. In essence, all he did was circle away from his right hand and time him with his jab and counter rights. If Martinez had managed to fight Pavlik during the time people considered him to be a top p4p fighter, I still think Martinez would have outboxed him.
