Has Joe Calzaghes speed considerably declined with age? Or does he still have very good hand speed?

Personally I think he still has very good to exceptional hand speed.

    Clip 3 posts down...

He must be so fast that I can't even see the link for the clip.

Way slower, way more open, way less able to connect and no where near as much leverage placed into the punches that he used to place in them.

Is that what you honestly see... I know you are a huge Joe fan... that fight was stopped on the speed of a flurry... nothing else...

Take a look at his fight against Robin Reid, or Byron Mitchell.

Compare the types of punches he was throwing, the footwork, the angles.

Pitty patter punches that didn't even hurt Manfredo vs power punches, thrown with leverage at near the same speed? No difference, Joe has lost a huge amount of speed in the last 4-5 years.

As I stated that fight was stopped due to the speed of a consistent lengthy high volume flurry - nothing else. Somebody without great speed would not have been able to do that.

More so it was stopped because Manfredo was a boy fighting a man and had no right being in the ring in the first place, was completely over-awed and wasn't going to do **** in there, which the referee saw.

Nothing Calzaghe did made that stoppage. That was potentially one of the worst displays of him being sloppy you'll find.

Yep. I never followed Joe, but in the lead up to one of his fights they showed that clip and my jaw dropped. Ref never heard of "rope a dope". Joe practices those little speed moves and he even calls them punches, but lets be real here.

But I'll answer the thread question with a question. Why do you think he is fighting Jones instead of Pavlik?

I must admit - in terms of sloppiness - that it gives that Hopkins GIF kicking around a run for it's money. :D

Anyway, I disagree with PUGPOWER. I think he still obviously has a fair bit of speed in the tank, and it is low grade opponents like Manfredo that allow him to truly release it.

Look up the count down show to his last fight. Where he pity pats a heavy bag something like 1000 times in a minute and calls those PUNCHES!

Maybe that should be seen as a blueprint for future fighters. It serves him well.

Well, perhaps you see the difference in mind set between the America's and Eurpope. Do you like fights or boxing matches? Punches with no intent but to score for the judges? You can keep that kind of match in Europe, thank you very much. :deal
