Here's what Paul Strauss of East Side Boxing said last March of 2008 after the Marquez 2 fight:

"Manny is a more complete fighter now. His defense has improved, not that his strong chin needs much defense. His speed and ability to change the angle of his punches is uncanny. Marquez seemed confident several times in that he had his own guard properly in place, only to have Manny's punches get inside, or come around the side."

"Manny's so fast that he can almost lull his opponents into a false sense of security, giving them a feeling that their out of range, only to have him spring on to them like a cat. He throws two, three or more hard punches almost at a run. If they are still standing after the assault, they usually have an expression on their face that says, "Where the hell did that come from!"

"I've heard Emanual Steward comment more than once about Manny's poor balance, and that he's often out of position, but I'm not so sure. He seems to be pretty adept at what Jack Dempsey used to call his 'double shift'. With Manny it comes from the opposite side. First he throws the right jab, then a long straight left, with his left leg following, which makes it seem like he extended himself too far, and is out of position. However, another straight right is following up fast, which comes from the orthodox position. He does it in a blur, seemingly to run at his opponent, and to them it probably feels that way too."

Here are some animated gifs of what Strauss describe:

Animated Gif #1: Hoya backs down confident that Pacquiao missed only to be surprised by another punch (notice that Manny is now more patient backing down as soon as he landed):

    Animated Gif #2:
Pac bows down feinting like he was going for the body, DLH then put his guard down to protect the body, then Manny bend down surprising Hoya with straight left from that position (notice that Pac moves to the side and covers his face as soon as he landed):

There is no doubt he has come a long way....Diaz and that version of De la Hoya are bad gauges if you ask me however.

Might have to see how he does in the 3rd JMM fight.

    Diaz was a gimme fight.

And the DLH turned out to be one also, having said that Pac did what he had to do in both fights.

His next fight with Hatton will give us a good view on whether he has or not.

I don't know about that. Pacquiao has never been considered a good defender, and both De La Hoya and Diaz were completely overmatched and way too slow to land on Manny on a consistent basis. A future Hatton or Mayweather matchup would be a much better gauge of Pacquiao's defense.

No Pacquiao doesn't have a great blocking defense....

He evades every incoming hit by his speed.

Pacquiao`s defence is the same, he is not a hard fighter to hit at the elite level, Diaz & DLH offered no resistance & both performed below acceptable amatuer standards IMO.

Marquez was Pac`s last serious test & he got hit plenty & IMO lost to JMM by a score of 115-113.

Lets wait & see vs Hatton, thats all Im saying.

if you look at the second marquez fight, you can see that pac's defense has noticably improved. pac was blocking, slipping and ducking under punches while throwing his own. i remember a video sequence of the fight posted here before where pac slipped and ducked under about 7 successive punches of jmm and none of them hit him.

pac has also improved as a counter-puncher. his KD of marquez was from a compact left cross counter. pac also staggered jmm with an overhand left counter after ducking under a jmm left hook.

There is no way of telling as his last two opponents hav'nt thrown any punches. Whether thats down to better movement i'm not sure but he has definitely shown a better array of punches.

He's not as easy to hit as before, He uses angles much more than before and he knows how to circle is opponent to avoid getting hit. His speed and footwork improved creating better defense. But yeah, just so the skeptics are satisfied, i too would like how his fight with Hatton would pan out. Hopefully we dont hear the same usual comments like Diaz nor DLH being too slow as criticisms

Well, considering that his opponents have become less skilled and older lol, we truly can't tell if his defense has gotten better. I know that his variety of punches has gotten better offensively, and he has become smarter, but defense is something that you can never perfect. Pac has gotten better defensively, but his last two opponents don't give us a clue as to how much. Marquez had success against Pac.

    Absolutely not.

His improvements since their first fight became overstated and rhis was proved, I believe, with Marquez hitting Pacquiao constantly in their rematch.

His defense looks to have improved because his competition had gone down hill since his fights with Marquez. Undeniable truth.

in 5 of his last 6 bouts Pacman has rarely been hit as much as people claim he has, and the one fight where he did get hit alot was against a fighter who was breed to fight someone like Manny.

Pacquiao's defense is headmovement, ring generalship and shelling, just because Pacquiao cannot fight behind leg these ignorant haters like to believe Pacman has little to no defense.
