everyone who posted are all wrong despite sounding intelligent.. the simple logic fails them. Why oh why used marquez as a gauge whether his defense improve or not? Marquez a defensive master, the p4p best counter puncher in boxing today.

When pac fighted marquez, i rated his offense rather than his defense, the simple fact that he was able to trade back to back shots with marquez and more so knock him down makes his offensive abilities one of the elite and one of the best in the sport today.

If you want to check out how much pac's defense has improve, what you would use as a gauge is a fighter who is known for elite level offensive abilities, e.g. hatton, juan diaz, calzaghe.

Vice versa, rating one's offensive abilities must be done with fighter's such as toney, marquez, hopkins who are known for their great defense.

Did anyone rate calzaghe's defensive abilities against hopkins? I assumed you rate them poor. How about his offense? Good, right? thats why he was able to get through hopkins. Simple logic.

Let's just wait for hatton-pac since its a done deal and everyone can rate pac's defense by then

notice the left that he threw against jmm when he knocked him down in the 3rd round. notice his right hand that just after throwing the left and seeing that jmm was going to throw a left counterknockdown. beautiful cover if ever that left counter hit its mark. unfortunately, jmm was knocked down by the initial punch.

Where do people get this idea that JMM is a defensive fighter in the mold of Hopkins or Toney?

Marquez is pretty good defensively, but he's not in the Toney, Hopkins category because offensively, he's alot more active and puts a whole lot more leverage in his shots than those two.

When Pac was fighting JMM, he was'nt fighting a defensive fighter......he was fighting a fighter who takes full advantage of a fighter that opens up on him.

Though JMM does well on defense, I'd categorize him as a counterpunching offensive machine, he times the others incoming and lets his hands go to make him pay for his aggression..........you dont have to be a come foward aggressor to be on offense.

Evander Holyfield is known as "The Warrior" but he fought very similarly as far as tact is concerned to JMM......like JMM, Holyfield waited for the other to get off first, and then he'd make him pay dearly for his mistakes.
......both JMM and Holyfield play good on the defensive side, but they're far from being defensive fighters......both these guys look to punch, and punch hard at every opportunity.

marquez bit of aggressiveness was just of late in his career and he uses it to lure his opponents into counters which is part of his style, but he's more into the defense department even though he's a complete boxer. Cotto for example, imo best complete boxer in the game today. Has good offense and defense and could be use as a gauge for both areas.
