One of the writers at our site has taken a detailed look at whether or not Juan Manuel Marquez has surpassed Barrera and Morales on the all-time Mexican great list. I'm not sure where I'd rank him especially since he has a big fight or two left in the tank. His career is definitely winding down.

Who ranks highest with the biggest win? I think nothing trumps Morales' defeat of Pacquiao in their first fight. Barrera's win over Hamed may be second. Marquez' greatest achievements are a draw and loss against Pacquiao arguably, and his ability to move up weight and pick up titles, something the other two did as well.

Has Juan Manuel Marquez surpassed Barrera and Morales?

Last month a Mexican legend climbed through the ropes for the 58th time to defend his world lightweight title against dangerous contender Michael Katsidis. The fight was brutal, the older man by seven years climbing off the canvas to batter his bewildered foe with precise punches, bringing the referee’s intervention at 2:14 of the ninth round. The fighter in question is of course, Juan Manuel Marquez.

Marquez rose off the canvas to stop Michael Katsidis late just a few weeks ago.

Marquez is arguably performing better than ever at thirty-seven. There is talk of a third fight with Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao or a fight with Amir Khan (providing he gets past Maidana this week).

Marquez is the current WBO and WBA world lightweight champion and in the top five of most pound-for-pound lists. He holds victories over the likes of Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Diaz [x2] and Joel Casamayor.

No he hasnt because he lacks any real big fight in his resume. Marquez and barrera fought big fights agaisnt eachother and other fighters. Marquez is maybe #ten in the mexican atg list.

not yet. but he's still active and doing really good. he's not really far surpassing MAB and EM especially when he beats the champs at 140.

Morales has beat the pacmonster. Not only did he beat him, he did it by fighting him toe to toe. Not sure an old casa and Katsidis make him better. Plus i tought Barrera shoud have won imo. That should be a knockdown not a point deduction

No , and I dont think he will , when losing in your prime years to Chris John and being schooled by Norwood are no disgrace , but this just puts you below two of the greatest Super Batams of all time.

No. His popularity is only due to his fights with Pac. Remove these and nobody will hype him.

I think he is about their level.

JMM had 2 big fights with Pacquiao and that alone should count for a lot of weight.

two loosing attempts as well as complete fiasco vs Floyd ... so Marquez is
doing good against second level opposition but he lacks the real spark,
somethings which would Mexican folks remembered in the next 10 years
    like Barrera-Hammed or Barrera-Morales 3x

Barrera wasnt robbed, he got stupid and fouled Marquez when he was down, in most cases (Jones-Griffin and Abraham-Dirrell) it could have ended in a dq. Barrera got of lucky if anything
