Has Mayweather fought the best Welterweights available?

The question has always been not has he fought them but when . When they were in great form he avoided them .

The man was out-boxed by Carlos Quintana. Just stop. And I liked Williams, excellent fighter, but you're not being realistic. The man couldn't hold his title at 147 for a stretch before he moved up in weight. He moved up after his rematch with Carlos. THAT is what is called a fact.

So exactly at what point in time was Floyd supposed to fight Williams at 147? (Serious question. Name the Summer/Fall of a particular year it could have gone down.)

Arum's refusal to work with Oscar killed the Margarito and Cotto fights of that time period. That is also well documented and you can quote Bob Arum on refusing to make the Oscar fight. So Mayweather walked.

Again, at what point in time was that fight (Margarito) supposed to take place? (Again, be specific.) And if you think that was a 50:50 fight, we'll have to agree to disagree. Boring fight, with Floyd pot shoting to an easy victory. Clear UD. You guys are absolutely nuts with this Margarito was a threat to Mayweather stuff. Ridiculous.

 

Miguel Cotto admitted he never challenged Floyd. Margarito got beat by Williams. go get a life

 

Did you listen to what I said there? Quoting dates, times, politics, etc, etc, etc....doesn't bullet proof an argument or prove anything...all that stuff is just pieces moving on a chess board. Now as far as Paul Williams not getting a fight with Mayweather...ya he blew that one pretty badly. Not going to disagree with you there. Infact that was one of my main points. Paul didn't organize his career in a way that would have allowed him to get a fight with the biggest name in boxing at the time (Floyd). So naming a time when it could have happened is irrelevant. There is NO reason to hate on Floyd for that fight not having taken place....same goes for Margarito and Cotto....their fault those fights never happened.

Now as far as you thinking Mayweather could have out boxed Williams because Quintana did, that is logic of a kind...I will give you that...but its not great logic...and to be frank I'm a little worried that if I tried to talk some sense about that match-up with you, you might not be able to rationally handle that discussion...so lets move onto Margarito and I`ll explain why...

The only reason I mentioned Margo is because at the time lots of people thought he'd whoop Floyd and were ****ed that they missed out on that fight. Which was a totally legitimate point of view at the time. I'm glad that fight didn't happen...cause we later found out the guy was a total fraud. And I didn't say non-cheating Margo and Floyd would be a competitive fight....but you seemed to think that even Margacheto would have been an easy fight would have been easy work for floyd...which makes me wonder?:huh Cause honestly dude if you think Floyd vs a guy with a granite chin and CEMENT in both his gloves is a one sided blowout for Floyd...then you obviously think Floyd is a super hero...unfortunately super heros only exist in comic books. So yes, you are deluded when it comes to Floyd...

 

Stop arguing...we are past that point now...the fight is on.

He is about to face the best Welterweight available...and he isn't just the best he is one of the greatest. Whoever the victor respect must be given.

I don't think he's ever really been afraid. Pro-boxers don't really work like that. And trust me a high level Narcissist like Floyd doesn't live in a world where he actually thinks anyone can beat him. IMO he probably retired more as a business move then anything else. Supply vs Demand. Fight twice every couple of years. Have greater control over opponents and maximize your single fight earnings everytime you fight...that was the business model pre-showtime. And it's smart business.

DLH - Not ranked. First bout at 147 in 7 years.
Hatton - 140 pound fight
Cotto - 145 WW Catchweight Bout (One of Pac's best performances IMO)
Clottey - Coming off a loss, but was ranked top 10 in 147 division (FOUGHT HIM INSTEAD OF MAYWEATHER!!!)
Margarito - 150 catchweight for vacant 154 pound title
Mosley - Coming off a loss and a draw. 147 pound fight.
Marquez - No wins at 147 pounds
Bradley - Clear robbery. Still, this was Bradley's first fight at 147 pounds. Unranked.
Marquez - KTFO6. Juan's 1st win at 147 pounds. His other victory is over Mike Alvarado.
Rios - Coming off a loss. 1st fight at 147 pounds.
Bradley - Wins over Provo (Provo's only fight at 147, unranked), Marquez. Has beat only 1 ranked opponent (Marquez) who was only ranked based on his victory over Pacquiao. (Has since beat Alvarado - Juan's only wins at 147: Alvarado and Pac)
Algieri - 140 pound fighter. First ever 147 pound fight.


Personally, I think his 147 pound run has been vastly exaggerated by his ardent supporters. FIVE, that's right, 5 of these bouts are with men who had NEVER WON A BOUT AT 147 POUNDS! That's HALF (50%, 5 out of 10) his 147 pound fights. Add in the fact DLH was not ranked at 147 at the time of their bout either, and that's 6 guys who were not ranked at 147 in his 10 fights at 147. :yikes

2 of the 5 men who had wins at 147, were coming off of losses. (Clottey off a loss & Mosley a loss and a draw) A 3rd, hadn't fought at 147 in 7 years and was not ranked. (DLH) A 4th at a Catchweight. (Cotto) The 5th remaining guy is Bradley... See above.


Pac****s shouldn't throw stones in glass houses. They are pretty funny talking about Mayweather's resume. Let's take a close look at Pacquiao. Can somebody please break down the "Greatness" of this epic 147 pound run against guys who had never won a bout at 147? :huh
