Just looking over their respective careers and while Whitaker has accomplished alot in the sport I personally feel that Mayweather has a slight edge overall. Whitaker maybe has the biggest win in Chavez but to me it looks like Mayweather has beaten better fighters what do you think?

p.s This is not a head to head discussion.

I agree on this with you , while i respect Whitaker as being one of the finest to ever box, i think Mayweather has a tremendous resume. Some of Whitaker's oponents dont look too good now, but they were solid good fighters at the time. But imo Mayweather has a better resume overall , Chavez, Hernandez, Castillo, Hernandez, there has been so many, and then the conquests at the higher weights aswell

I wouldn't say "surpass". Mayweather is just the latest, so remembering his accomplishments is easier. Back in the day, not too many people were calling out Whittacker like they do with Floyd now. Many people forget that Sweet Pea moved up to 154 and did a real paint job on a guy named Julio Caeser Vazquez, to win a version of that title. Vazquez was fresh off a victory over one Winky Wright. The Vazquez win loks a lot better now than it did at the time, if anyone remembers to look at it.
Whittaker was brilliant, but like Floyd , his style and personality lost him some fans.

About even i think, maybe with a slight biased edge towards Sweet Pea. If Mayweather fights guys like Mosley, Cotto, Williams and wins then i'd definitely give him the edge but head to head it's Whitaker everytime.

I think Whitaker is great and good resume but IMO I can not understand what is so big deal with his opposition. I never thought his resume as so great, certainly not in the level of DLH, TITO, PBF, etc.

no ****in contest, pernell had more heart to stay in the game then floyd regardless of how old he was getting.Even if floyd beat Cotto/williams/spinks etc whitaker still has the better resume IMO,

Part of the reason Pernell stayed in the game was to feed his cocaine addiction.

    They are close.

If Mayweather fights and beats Cotto, he will clearly surpass Whitaker.

It depends what you mean by surpassed. Mayweather has won more titles in more weigt clases than Whitaker but Whitaker fought beter compotion. Also an arugument can be made that Whitakeris the best all time at a weight class lightweight. I don't think the same can be said about Mayweather.
