I guess time will tell ...... but i would like your thoughts on his plan with both hands against Hopkins?

Mind you Hopkins was the outsider in the fight and some people were saying he was over the hill.

Pavliks biggest name is Taylor x 2 and the first fight was lucky Pav didn't get stopped.

 

Yes that is a big name in my opinion, a guy who the record books say beat Hopkins twice.

I don't think Mundine will get in the ring at middlewight with Kelly Pavlik

Who are the three biggest wins on Mundines resume and where do they stand in world boxing? I'm thinking Soliman, Green and Echols???? Am i missing a bigger fish? Even WE get wrapped up in the mouth: he has done nothing as a boxer (as opposed to as an athlete/personality).

 

Seems to be a bit of disrespect towards Pavlik which I've never understood.

The level of his opponent gradually stepped up all the way through his career. From memory only five had losing records when he fought them. He took on the dangerous Edison Miranda who was just coming off a win over Allan Green. Nobody else wanted to near Miranda but Pavlik pushed him back from the start and dominated him in a great KO win.

Knocked down and recovered against Taylor the first time, was on the verge of being stopped but Taylor couldn't land the finishing blow. Came out and won the next round and then scored that spectacular KO.

Outboxed Taylor in the rematch. Got schooled against Hopkins 10 pds above his mw limit, a result very few picked (onya teke) but will have learnt a great deal from that.

Last time out dominated Rubio yet when Rubio decided to try his hand at throwing some punches that did land got paid back in interest.

The guy is a monster at mw and would destroy Mundine. The only name out there for Pavlik is Abraham and theres no rush for that, why kill off the only valid name there is for him to fight?

Like Rodin, I've watched 18 of his 36 bouts and don't think he gets a fair crack. I've got a soft spot for him because it was the first Taylor bout that got me back into following the sport.

God I'd love to see him fight Mundine but I'll believe when they're accross the ring from each other and the bell rings.

Didn't bother him fighting at 168-170lbs against Taylor the second time. But i guess people will always look for excuses (Hopkins fight)

If you look at my original post i stated that i think he has a long way to go with respect to someone calling him a future hall of famer.

Pavlik is the best out there at the moment at MW no issue there, but he is slightly overrated nonetheless.

 

My argument is that hes not a natural at 170lbs, Hopkins, it could be said with hindsight, drew him into a carefully laid trap.

Your correct on the HOF call, way too early for that and his resume needs more. I don't think hes over-rated at mw, incredibly weak division at the moment unfortunately. Over-rated on a p4p scale, possibly, but thats always the individuals opinion. I'd have him just outside the top 10.

Yeah, good point on the Taylor rematch at the higher weight, but he was facing an opponent he'd already beaten badly and the effects of that were still with Taylor. mate, I'll offer no excuses for the Hopkins fight, he got schooled, but I reckon in the long run it will benefit him and really, it was a career defining victory by Hopkins which we were lucky to witness.

Actually an opponent who might be interesting for Pavlik is Paul Williams, if he can carry the weight. Just acquired a few of his fights and his potential is scary, incredible reach that will cause more fighters problems and seems to have his head screwed on right. Havn't watched Qunitana I yet but will be interested to see how he bettered him.

 

Leon - Quintana boxed brilliantly imo in defeating Paul Williams. Sensational pure boxing against the bigger/taller man. We all know that Williams blew him away in the rematch though.

 

Yeah, looking forward to watching it, but have a backlog of around 3500 fights to get thru yet, I sorta forgot that even though its fun to collect it might be a good idea to spare some time to watch the bloody things as well.

 

What you have to remember when you're juggling weights is it's easy to get bogged down with the numbers.
A Middleweight fought a light heavy. That's the definitive difference.
A few pounds to a thoroughbred can have an amazing effect on their performance. In the boxing game of late, the two primary examples might be Hatton (V Collazo) & ODH (V Manny).

Re the HOF prediction. It's not cast in stone, it's just an opinion.
One thing you have to notice, is that there are not many fighters in the upper weight division that have trod a tougher path so successfully.

We have to be pretty careful when we say that a division is weak, because we tend to compare a purple patch with every period.

The days of Hagler Hearns Leonard Duran are not around every other corner.

Many people tend to bag out a fighter when they see their fans going overboard, and this was the case with Pavlik.
I called him a hype job waiting to get exposed. That was in reply to the many people who claimed he'd be the new king, and that he'd wipe the floor with guys like Calzaghe and Kessler.
The Hopkins result didn't surprise me much at all, and I said before hand that if he did fight Calzaghe, he'd get toyed with a bit and lose a wide decision. Kessler would be way too good for him also.

People can't bag him for his selection of fights though.

On paper, Kelly V Joe would be an extraordinary fight. Joe makes excellent use of his lefty stance & never stops punching. Kelly is not phased by southpaws & counters according to the pace. He is also good at getting his foot outside in these exchanges & has solid left rip.
Having said that, it's still a middy V a LH & I think that is too much of a disadvantage.
Re Kessler.
He's a fighter that wins on the front foot. I watched one of his earlier fights with a european contender that exposed his vulnerability on the back foot & I noticed that in the fights I saw before Joe, his opponents had their best rounds when they could walk him back. Joe made Kessler feel surrounded. He never let the dane stand still for a moment, & I have no doubt in the world that Pavlik would do the same but in smaller doses but in a much more punishing fashion. I couldn't see Kessler fighting his own fight beyond 6-7 rounds, that's if he was allowed to get on the front foot at all.

Trouble is, noones been able to capitalize much on Kessler when he goes back. It's not like he has a garbage defence or a suspect chin either.

As I said before regarding a Green/Kessler fight (before the forum cops deleted the thread), Kessler is more fluent with his punches. He has good speed for a big guy, and is precise with his punches.
Apart from power, Kelly doesn't have one advantage over Kessler at all, and I just don't see Kessler putting himself in a vulnerable position enough to see him lose against Pavlik.
I believe Pavlik would try to make Kesler feel like he has no room, but I don't think he'd be able to execute his plan well enough.

Joe would beat him with a bit of ease imo. He's just too crafty and has too much ring smarts for Pavlik. It'd be a nightmare for Kelly as he's the sort of opponent that Calzaghe thrives on.
