    Griffin 2 wasn't just speed.

he had raw power. people say last thing that leaves you is the punch.

I think that's bollox. depends on the fighter.

speed was a lot of jones, but he had real snap too. both have gone, imo.

hopkins always said jones lacked the fundamentals, and that's why he is suffering later on. that's harsh, i think. but at the very elte level, it's not far off

They aren't gone. He still has greater handspeed than most fighters, its still comparable to Calzaghe's in short bursts.

There is a difference in boxing between having the raw power to hurt somebody and the capability to effectively utilize it. So whilst Jones is capable of hurting Calzaghe, it is not likely due to other areas that are lacking.

If the question is simply does Jones have the power, I have to say yes.

I thought so too. He was on shaky legs with glassy eyes as the ref gave him the 8 count.
I think he's been hurt a fair few times over the years, but he recovers so quickly and completely, it may as well have not happened.

The picture I have in my head is of him on his knees, then his upper torso does a little half-turn, his mouth is gaping open, and his eyes are staring into nothingness.

But as you said, he does seem to recover well.

Maybe I should watch the Mitchell fight again, but I thought it was shock. he got up quickly and got mad, as far as I remember. the fight was topped early i thought, though i could understand why.

the only time i worried was when he was dumped on his ass by hopkins. that just looked heavier.

Nah, I think if Joe was shocked he would have gave a wee embarrased smile when he got up.

I also think Mitchell knew he was badly hurt, and thats why he jumped all over him; if Mitchell had have connected before Calzaghe did then it might well have been over.

Funnily enough I have no trouble with the stoppage. Calzaghe did catch Mitchell first after the kd and Mitchell was on his way out when it was waved off.

For split second I actually thought he was going to spin 180 degrees whilst his legs give way, and land flat on his back, staring at the lights.

That punch was a monster shot and I reckon it would have knocked out 99.9% of opponents. He also had Joe folded in half with a body shot just before the knockdown.

    :good

Joe was trying to swing one himself (left hook?), but walked right into it (right hook?)

I'm not definite on the punch selection process.

Of course Roy can hurt Joe but it is very unlikely. What many people don't realise about Joe is that he is a seriously hard *******!!
His win against Lacy was a pure masterclass, all the yanks were purring about Lacy before that fight and Lacy has never recovered from the utter thrashing he took, every round could have been scored 10-8 due to the massive gulf in punches landed.
Joe's win against Kessler is another amazing victory which seems to be underrated. Kessler is a monster and will eventually rule the division imo.
Finally Joe's win against Hopkins although very close was a very very good win which has been proven by Hopkins outstanding performance against Pavlik.

So Joe can be hurt which has already been proven by Hopkins, Mitchel and Eubank but RJJ cannot beat JC. Not in a million years imo.
Joe wins by late tko or very wide UD.

problem roy has is that joe has such good movement its difficult to hit him flush. Also he has a great chin. In the kessler/hopkins he got caught flush and he just adapted in the ring and switched tactics and they never hit again flush.

roy does not have the ring smarts in the class of hopkins/calzaghe so i dnt expect him to out think joe either

As jc says Joe hasnt even been close to being stopped before.

I think the most ive ever seen him hurt was in the second round against Byron Mitchell, and as we all know he got up and finished the fight in spectacular fashion.

As to the question YES Jones can hurt Calzaghe, again the only problem is Jones letting it all hang out for the finish. This i dont think he would do, even if he had Calzaghe hurt.

As for the fight Calzaghe UD

Gonna put my neck on the line and say Joe wins TKO late in the fight.

I don't think Roy could knock Joe out. He was happy to survive with Tarver last they fought, and Felix Trinidad doesn't belong at that weight, and he wasn't knocked out either.
