I remember several years ago, when Eastern Block heavyweights were still under the radar (with the exception of the K-Bros), but generating a lot of buzz. At that time, "people in the know," were pegging Sultan Ibragimov as the best of the bunch. There were articles on this website and others that spoke of Sultan as the Eastern Euro with the most potential and ability. Sultan was given the nod over other Eastern European fighters like: Dimitrenko, Chagaev, Valuev, Platov, Virchis, etc.

If anything Sultan has exceeded his hype. Because most people picked Shannon Briggs to Ko him early. And probably about half picked Holyfield to win.

Before the fight people were claiming Briggs hit so hard, he could ko Wlad, Maskaev and all the other champs because they have weak chins . Then afterwards the fight they claimed Briggs sucked , when I know most people picked him to win.

Same hear. He doesnt look like a heavyweight, much less one that could punch. He looks out of shape and sloppy but he is actually pretty good. He's a overachiever if you ask me.

I expected Sultan to win that fight, though I gave Briggs an outside chance if he were able to land cleanly. But, considering the first time I read about this guy and the first time I saw him fight (against Goofi) to his most recent performances; and, the guy's a bust IMO. I'm not saying he's not a good boxer, just that he hasn't lived up to my expectations. I think getting dropped by Austin prompted him to stop being so aggressive, which was one of his assets IMO.

He hasn't really done anything to claim that he isn't worthy of the hype, he's just done it in incredibly unspectacular fashion, but he's still doing it.

Hell no! They talked him as ko machine! Ad said that everone is ducking him ect! Sultans promoters just talk and talk! They said that Briggs was beeding or something like that! No way he has lived up to their hype!

But I think he could give some problems to Wlad with his Myweather style!

Sultan needs a fight with one of the guys you mentioned. For my money, he has the quickest feet, and hands of the fighters you listed.

Ibragimov vs Chagaev would be a very even match up of two un-defeated champions in their primes.

What hype? I think the guy is underated due to his looks. He does not look like what we think a pro athlete should look like. He obviously has some talent though. He is a better athlete than many on this board give him credit for being. Mayweather has turned him into a pretty good boxer -- maybe not all that fun to watch, but pretty effective. I think the best thing he has going is that he is a smart guy. He does not get caught up in his own hype and limelight. He may not be at Vlad's level physically, but he is less likely to have a pyscho-meltdown than Vlad when the going gets tough. In that regard, he is the Anti-Golota, a guy who seemed to have meltdowns more often than a grilled-cheese sandwich.

You forget Sergei was dumb enough to get knock into tomorrow by that same asthma patient. Me thinks Iggy fought the smarter fight against that asthma patient. Odds are, Vlad would send both of these guys to the ER.

Sultan isn´t great but I do have a soft spot for him. He is so unlike the bragging types we normally see in boxing.
Did he live up to the hype? I didn´t even know he was hyped!

I like the handspeed & the weird angles. He can be crude at times though & he forgets defense now & then, still a good fighter.

Chag' vs. Ibrag' would be an interesting fight, I wish Sultan fought Ruslan instead of Holy like they orignally planned.
