    -------

In 2004-2007 the heavyweight division sucked.

Then we saw the incorporation of fighters like Chagaev, Povetkin, Gomez, Arreola, to the decent heavyweights like Wlad and Vitali.

Have we seen the end of the heavyweight crisis? Is this era "decent"?

    Current fighters:

    -Wlad Klitschko
    -Vitali Klitschko
    -Eddie Chambers
    -Chris Arreola
    -Alex Povetkin
    -Ruslan Chagaev
    -David Haye

    -Eddie Chambers - Cruiserweight
-Chris Arreola - Seemingly outta shape
-Alex Povetkin - Glorified Olympian; no promise
-Ruslan Chagaev - Chaga-who? Another guy Klitschko jabbed to death
    -David Haye - Cruiserweight

    Sadly, no hope in sight.

I give a lot of those guys mroe respect than most, but the ease with which the Klits are rolling these guys is not good.

i think so, its not a bad division. i think the main problem is that the klitschkos wont fight each other.

    Yeah,
Sadly no hope in sight when the guys you hate are ruling the division.

This talk means nothing.... People bitched about Lennox Lewis during his actual career.
People always ***** about the state of the heavyweight division. Then they look back fondly years down the line.
****, it happened with Larry Holmes, "he's boring, only jabs.... too defensive"
****, it happened with Tyson, "only fights bums or past their primes.... he was only good because the heavyweight division was so bad"

Heavyweight division always has people saying they hate it... it sucks.... blah blah blah.

If you pay close attention even the nostalgic fans of yesteryear usually only talk about the potential... not the actual but the potential. They talk about the potential of Bowe, the potential of Ruddock, .... on and on.
Because the fact of the matter is this, guys like Bowe that people get all swooney about when the name is mentioned didn't always (or even kind of regularly) fight the best guys out there. ****, he'd fight smaller heavyweights like Herbie Hide, Holyfield, Mathis. Light fisted guys like Larry Donald. Guys with overblown records like Jorge Luis Gonzalez.

    But the point is this....
heavyweight division supposedly always suck, the guys at the top are always boring, the competition is always thin, and the top guys are always avoiding each other.

Sure, there might be pockets here and there where that doesn't seem to be the case. But that's the exception, not the rule. To hold VK and WK to such a different standard than the majority of the history of the heavyweight division is laughable.

It's 'decent', certainly. I think it all stems from the fact the Klitschko's are so damn big and good with it that they make everybody look terrible and that has an adverse effect on how things are perceived.

That's not to say its a top notch division outside of the brothers, but its better than cruiserweight, light-heavy, middleweight, junior middleweight and probably more.

I also think people expect a lot from the heavyweight division and it isn't quite there.

Fantastic post, I've echoed many of the same opinions. Alot of people act like the Heavyweight is traditionally a very strong division, when the truth is those pockets of quality depth are the exception rather than the rule.

With anything heavyweight related, things always look better once it's over and people have the next generation to ***** about. :!::good

Haye and Chambers are the best out there and the only ones with a legit chance at beating the Klits anytime soon. Of course, this is a serious Chambers who is over-sized, and that hurts him stylistically. Of course, he is fighting the wrong Klit brother.

I agree with you guys in priciple, the the "two headed monster" is cleaning out the division too quikcly, while all these young guys- Fury, Ktrestchemann, Pianeta, Kaufman, Chisora, are loosing or putting on stinkers, as if trying to race to the bottom.

And one of the few guys left on deck, Alex Povetkin, is MIA.

The talent is tehre, but someone has to step up like they really want it.

I think the Hw division is getting better with the Klitschkos as the dominant champs but it still needs its big fights to get back to what it was in 2002.

The thing is I couldn't help thinking in the Klitchko/Arreola fight that a fighter like Tyson could have gotten inside that reach and done some damage. But you could just tell by the bodies of the heavies, esp. Americans, that no such a man will show up anytime soon. Haye hasn't done anything to be classified. When I see someone besides the Klitchko brothers look as if they actually trained for a fight I would be more interested in the division. The klitcko/arreola fight is the first one I've enjoyed in a long long time though. I would definately tune in to se Cristobal again. :good

    Signed,
    biased against the heavies

One thing I've seen is that the biggest difference between a bad division and a good one right up there with talent, is matchmaking. The best matchups get made, people get interested- even if the fighters involved aren't necessarily A+ caliber fighters. It boils down to bang for the buck, and a number of people resent those who win too easily- I've seen it with Floyd and the Klitschkos recently (Wlad in particular). I don't have anything against those fighters whatsoever because it's not nearly as easy to win at the level they do as they make it look, but I can understand why some fans can get frustrated with it. Defenses against guys who aren't even top 10 caliber are hard to get excited for, and fights amongst top 10 fighters are too rare.

Fights like Vitali-Arreola need to happen, because it's the healthy course of a division for the old champs to fight contenders until someone becomes good enough to knock them off or retire. It's high time Povetkin, Chambers, and Haye take their shots at the top- I know Eddie will take it, but the other two seem to be a little hesitant just yet. Bottom line is, though, they need to get ready for the Klitschkos and make the fights happen. Once they do, the division will be better for it.

    Crisis ended?

lol. That division is a complete wasteland.
It's so dire that we have to resort to out of shape fat guys and unproven smaller cruiserweight guys.
If it wasn't for the Klitschkos, the hw division would be banned from television and unspoken for a long time.
Don't expect any big heavyweight PPV event for a few years :-(

Even the cruiserweight right now is healthier than the hw division (with an anticipated ppv event like hopkins-adamek).

The only HW event that is close to anticipation and PPV success is klit vs klit. You know you're in trouble when the divisions biggest and only event is two brothers facing each other.
