has the tactic employed by Cotto last night EVER worked?

I'm 24 and I know I'm not as up on my boxing history as perhaps I should be but it seems to be that the tactic simply isn't a good one. The closest fairly recent match I can think of is Freitas Corrales where the result was essentially the same. Freitas dominated till he gassed then got TKOd. I know people will mention Floyd Mayweather in this thread but I don't think he circles the ring anywhere near as much as Cotto did last night or Freitas did in the Corrales fight.

nearest style to margarito is andrade.

cotto needs to learn how to take rest periods against a swarmer, he should have tied up a lot more in the fight to break margarito`s rythem and relentless aggression.

Quintana beat Williams with a similar style. Although, Quintana was gassed in the final 2 rounds, he held on to win.

That's what I thought as well. He only held Margarito when he was stunned, he should have tied him up and in doing so would have had more left in the tank for the championship rounds. Cotto did most of his scoring with his back to the ropes when he should have been holding on and picking his spots when he had Margarito in the centre of the ring where he would have room to move.

I saw the first fight, but considering how the 2nd fight went I don't know how much of the first fight was Williams being off or Quintana being off. And either way, he was dead tired before the 12th, which is the problem. Is it that the guys employing the tactic don't have the stamina, or is it that it just can't be done for 12 rounds? I mean these guys are pros, they should know their own bodies well enough to know how many rounds they need to go while in training to be able to last a full 12 with what ever game plan they're bringing fightnight.

I agree that he couldn't just stand toe to toe with him considering that Margarito has the most unbelievable jaw I've ever seen combined with a high pressure style and good power, I just question how much circling was invovled, the lack of clinches, that kind of stuff. All that circling seems to take a LOT out of a fighter.

The only way to beat Margarito is get behind a jab - Cotto was toying with him for five rounds before getting on his bike instead of sticking to the plan

    Eh?

He was dead tired man. You can't keep blasting a guy like that, moving and ducking without getting exhausted. And lets not forget all the bodywork Tony was doing from rounds 1-6.

Lets not start making excuses for Cotto like everyone did for Clottey. The fact is it takes a LOT of energy to do what Cotto did for even 6 rounds, let alone 12. Nobody can do that.

I agree but Cotto save for throwing his body shots did everything a fighter should do namely ending his combos with a jab which is something only a few fighters do but technically a great asset to your aresenal (it allows you to score and keep the guy on the defensive while you shift).

Cotto's movement was namely his angles was excellent. Marg was just a brick wall last night. Those types of flurries would have ended most fighters..

I agree - Margarito was just something else last night.

On that form I would back him against anybody, ever at 147.

    He was just unbelievable.

    But can he repeat that?

I've seen guys do it for 15 rounds. The problem is that Cotto got hit too much, and his defense isn't "A" grade

Mayweather circled as much or more, IMO. Floyd was just smart enough to throw singles or quick doubles and get out instead of planting his feet and throwing heavy combinations. Cotto doesn't know how to properly box and use that method. This is something the people picking against Cotto knew going into it.

And all along some were building him to be a god when he is so limited.

He should be sore right now.
