If my memory is correct, John Michael Jonson caught Junior Jones with a HARD shot while Jones was down, but wasn't penalized and went on to win the fight.

At least it can be argued that Margarito was mid way into a combination whereas Abraham (and Norris above) paused, reloaded and let go all while the opponent was on the canvas.

Yeah that's true, Cotto's knee had only just touched down when the punch landed.

    Right, Mathis.

On Tillery, Bowe jabbed him after the bell (after a clear pause in the action, too), Tillery kicked back, Newman chocked Tillery.... a real classy moment.

Roberto Duran floored Ken Buchanan with a sickening low blow 5 seconds after the bell of the 13th round...and it was ruled a KO. Duran was proclaimed the victor.

Today on ESB classic it is regarded as a top win for Duran, career defining.

One of the few times a fighter was "Up" but out.

Walcott would have been down had his hand not got caught in the ropes. But legel, Walcott was not down.

Now Marciano did nail Cockell when he was down in round 9.

as for bizarre? Starling/Molinares. Or when Mugabi beat Rene Jaquot for the 154 pound title and Rene had a broken ankle.

On a related note, where does this leave the tournament?

(I am assuming that the outcome of this tournament will be historicaly important)

Abraham was arguably the front runner before this fight.

Now a win for Ward or Froch would put them ahead of the field. The former event is more likley that the latter.

It's wide open now I guess, if Kessler beats Froch we'll have another fighter on 2 points.

Not so sure about Green/Ward...I haven't seen enough of Green to really make a comment about that.

I guess that Ward will win to make himself an unexpectede frontrunner.

Perhaps Ward is going to be the Max Schmelling figure of this tournament.

That would make it interesting if Ward beats Green and takes the lead, looking forward to seeing him vs Green anyway.

    Hurtado-Augustus (6:30)

    [yt]f6-4XkUOW-c[/yt]

hurtado definitely takes his time to make sure augustus is good and down (from a slip no less) before popping him across the jaw. absolutely ridiculous.

Yes, The most infamous example of a fighter hitting an opponent on the canvas was on June 26,1922...The great lightweight champion benny Leonard floored Welterweight champion Jack Britton, in the 13th round...While on the canvas ,Jack Britton was hit by the normally cool headed Leonard, while the referee was counting, and Leonard was disqualified in the 13th round...It was strongly rumored that Leonards mgr. was told by the mob " Not To Win ",thus Leonard's blow while Britton was on the canvas....Discretion is the better part of valor, sometimes...
