I was looking through the almanac the other day and saw that this year 2010 has the days fall the same as 1982. This won't happen again for a long time. I thought about that year in boxing history and all the great fights I went to and saw on t.v. There was never a better year for good fights for me in my lifetime. There was' Pedroza-LaPorte, Navaratte-Choi. Navaratte-Limon. Limon-choi, Limon-Chacon, Fletcher-Braxton/Jackson/Green, Boza-Edwards-Verderosa/Elizondo, Elizondo's bodypunching win over Kenty, Sanchez-Nelson, Braxton-Martin/Saad II, Arguello-Busceme/Ganigan/Pryor, Pryor-Kameda, Pintor off the deck ko of Seung Lee and his fights w/ Lujan/Gomez, Gomez' other 3 kos that year, 2 of which were televised, Holmes-Cooney/Cobb, Weaver vs. Dokes controversy, Mancini's great fight over Kim and one-round two-sided fight w/ Frias, Ayala was on the rampage, Hamsho returned with exciting t.v. wins over Parker and Czyz, Sibson's great win over Davidson. The year started with the great Navaratte-Choi fight and ended with four of the best fights I ever saw, Pryor-Arguello, Mancini-Kim, Gomez-Pintor, Limon-Chacon. And those final two Gomez-Pintor and Limon-Chacon 4 I consider the best fights I ever saw, w/ Limon-Chacon4 the best fight I ever saw in my lifetime. Does anyone else have great years for fights in your lifetime to match it. BTW, Bad Bennie retired that year also and for Philly fans, an era had passed. Red Smith died Jan. 15th of '82 and Cosell left in Nov. What a great year for boxing!
It was a great year, but unfortuantely, it was the beginning of the end of the 15 round title fight. Also, Sugar Ray retired, and Cooney had his boxing career ruined, and Page and Ramos suffered setbacks.
1982 was the year that the tough got going or got their asses kicked hence, Ray Leonard retired with a Doctor's note Alex Ramos suffered a a terrible tko Czyz was harrassed by hamsho's hamhocks Green was pulverized by Fletcher punishing punches page was punched out by Berbick cooney had his clock cleaned by Holmes
Hearns-Benitez was on the same card as Gomez-Pintor . . . 12/03/82 at the New Orleans Superdome. Amazing night of boxing!
