Has there even been a fighter like Jeff Lacy before he fought Calzaghe?

No what you said before was that he "wasn't regarded as the next Mike Tyson"

There were a number of comments and outlets stating that he has "been compared to a young Mike Tyson"

    fantastic post :deal

its so embarrasing to see the way america suddenley washed their hands of jeff lacy when calzaghe beat the **** out of him

the only way to see how much lacy was hyped for this fight is to bump the old threads for this fight back up :yep

Well what's the point of bringing the Tyson comparison up if we both acknowledge that it's meaningless?

Nope. Lacy still had fans. Until he barely beat Manfredo. Got a gift against Mendoza who Dawson KO'd in 4 rounds. Then lost a wide UD to Jermain Taylor.

Basically Calzaghe was the first to expose Lacy, but he was never a very good fighter as evidence by the fact he lost so many times afterwards. I mean Roy Jones Jr toyed with him.

By the way, being regarded as the next Mike Tyson means that people are expecting him to unify the entire division, become P4P #1 for many years, and become the most famous fighter in the world.

Being compared to Mike Tyson means that people see some similarities between the two. Even in the article you posted, it said that true fans knew that Lacy didn't have Tyson's speed, power, defense, or head movement.

If Lacy was really seen as the next Tyson, he would have been a 20 to 1 favorite over Calzaghe. Instead, he was barely a betting favorite over a guy who was seen as a protected paper champion.

In your heart, do you believe that Calzaghe ruined a dominant Tyson-like champion that night?

I actually like Calzaghe and regard him as a great 168lber, I just don't delude myself into thinking that he ruined the next Mike Tyson. Lacy was an exciting brawler whose defense was his chin and who was really a sluggish puncher that didn't even look invincible against cans. It was a fantastic performance against a B fighter.

    granted its all talk.

what my point is though, is confirming to those posters who said that he was never compared or likened to Tyson, that is all I'm saying.

    http://www.thesweetscience.com/boxing-article/3430/lacy-calzaghe-fight-predictions/

    we'll leave it at that.

Obviously I'm going to be classed as another "dumb-ass Brit" who supports his own fighters.

I'm merely trying to stick to the facts, and have no problem slating a Brit fighter when and if I think he deserves it.

For a fighter who legacy is regarded as "tainted" by some, there is a ***** of amount of Calzaghe threads popping up, christ it use to be daily.

you know as much as i do warrior that lacy got totally and utterly ****in ruined that night. he got one of the most comprehensive beatings ever witnessed in a ring. no fighter could ever comeback from that type of beating and ever be the same again, especially considering the shoulder probs (think it was shoulder?) that he suffered as well.

Surely even you can admit that saying that Lacy was ever as fast as Floyd Mayweather is so ridiculous that it is no indication of Lacy's actual ability at the time?

What are we even arguing - Lacy's hype or Lacy's ability level? I will concede that he was overhyped, but other than 1 or 2 idiots no one actually thought he was the next Tyson. Like I said before, a 168 Tyson would be a 20 to 1 favorite over Calzaghe. The true odds were close, meaning the betting public recognized that he was not anything close (remember how lightly regarded Calzaghe was the the time).

By the way, Alex Stone was a random writer for a boxing website. I could write an article for ESB right now in which I say that Floyd Mayweather, Jr. hits harder than George Foreman. It does not mean that the boxing world believes that Floyd Mayweather hits harder than George Foreman. That is about as ridiculous a comparison as Lacy's speed to Mayweather's.
