Has there ever been a fighter who visibly improved before our eyes like Pacquiao?

He didn't get his ass kicked by Morales. It was a fair fight that Morales won barely on the cards. Morales deserved to win, but he did not beat up Pacquiao. It was Pacquiao who rocked Morales multiple times.

How do we define improving though? From the first fight of their career to their prime? Barrera made big improvements after the Jones losses which was years into his career. But Pacquiao also made huge improvements after the Sanchez draw which was years into his career too.

So how are we defining "improved" for the purposes of this thread?

 

Distance from crudest to best. MAB traveled much further, IMO. He was a good fighter early in his career but really just a wrecking ball, and by his career's end he was a magnificent boxer. Pacquiao also started as just a wrecking ball, and did improve his skills over the years but his finished product was a lot cruder than Barrera's. I wouldn't ever call him a "magnificent boxer". Effective within his style, a phenomenal talent, sure - but not as refined in skills as MAB was.

 

I agree that Barrera took himself from crude to excellent technician. And Pacquiao went from crude to basically someone who was far less crude, but not a magnificent and technically proficient boxer.

If you're looking at distance traveled from low quality fighter to high quality fighter then Pacquiao did make tremendous improvements. Because he developed an in and out style that made it difficult to time and land. And by the time he was at Featherweight his speed and workrate were light years better than what it was in the beginning of his career.

But as far as just technical abilities I think Barrera traveled further.

 

Then why didn't the lawsuit lead to anything?
Could it be that Team Pacquiao filed it to save face(everyone was saying he was on PEDs)?

Pacquiao won the lineal Flyweight title when he was 20 years old.

So, the answer is no. The greatest improvement to human eyes has to be someone who began and established as a gatekeeper or less then improved up to a contender or champion.

 

I agree with you, Pacquiao is the best example. His road from the starting point to his prime is amazing. Right now, from the top of the dome, I can't recall other example than Canelo.

 

Throughout the careers of Pacquiao and Mayweather the illegal IV is far and away the most damning circumstantial evidence that either fighter has used PED's.

I'm not saying that Pacquiao automatically never took drugs because he was never caught red handed like Mayweather was. But it is odd that one fighter was caught with his hand in the cookie jar and one never was. And yet it was the guy who managed to prevent himself from being caught dead to rights that is constantly accused. And the guy who took an illegal IV is walking around here with half as many people complaining about PED usage.

 

Pacquiao at 16 when he debuted professionally had been only been boxing for 2 years and could barely throw a punch without tripping over his own two feet.

 

It lead to Mayweather settling the suit and paying out a settlement of which the amount was kept under seal (usually signifying a large sum of money).

When the man has never come close to being caught for drugs. Look I get it, a lot of guys have taken drugs and gotten away with it. But for the love of God, if the man has never even come close to popping can we let it go for just 1 single thread?
