Has there ever been a more destructive puncher than Terry McGovern at Bantamweight or Featherweight?

I am starting to think not.

Sure, but is McGovern more destructive at his best weight than Foster is at his?

Who do you personally thinks belongs in McGovern's class as a puncher?

We can find comparable punchers in other weight classes, but typicaly in the higher weight classes, ad not in his own bit of ecospace.

Even comparing him to sombody like Foster, we see that not only was he disposing of the best fighters of his era, but the quality level was prety high too.

    Palmer KO1
    Rotchfort KO1
    Forbes TKO2
    Gardner KO3, KO4
    White KO3
    Erne TKO3

He had the same effect on the long term reputations of some of his oponents as Tyson had on Spinks, only solidified over a longer period.

Erne is an awesome KO. Erne beat Lavigne, McFadden, Lavigne, Gans and then McGovern ditched him. One of the greatest KO victories in all of boxing. Erne is one of boxing's most underated fighters.

Any stories about how hard Terry was capable of punching?

This ko is what gives some possibility that Terry really did hurt Gans badly with the first right hand he landed. On tape you just can't tell and Joe would have had to have been almost out to have then fallen from the follow up punches that barely landed or missed. Nat Fleisher was a big fan of Terry and wrote a book about him but about the Gan's ko he said, "Terry was good, but he wasn't that good."

The impresive thing about McGovern is not just the people he was knocking out but also the fact that some of them were prety good.

When you knock out the reigning batamweight, featherweight and lightweight world champions all within a space of 16 months then you're pretty destructive. McGovern accomplished this feat.

Though many who were around back then consider Aurelio Herrera to be the harder punching featherweight. He was a miniature Earnie Shavers. Battling Nelson called him the hardest hitter he ever faced. He stopped people even McGovern couldn't knock out.

You dont see too many of these little guys knocking guys out, regardless of the opposition, and Austin's was pretty good. Austin had a very nice boxer puncher style and he always went for the kill.. Hes one of my favorites at the lower weights, as Im not a big fan of the lower weight classes.
