"Marciano was very strong especially for his size but he built a lot of his strength through an incredible training regiment. Marciano not only won his fights with brute force but he won it with heart and incredible conditioning. Foreman didn't have nearly the gas tank Marciano did especially in his early career but his brute strength still made him almost unbeatable.

As for those that say that strength doesn't mean anything in boxing this is not true. A boxer needs to have the skills there is no doubt about that but being physically strong especially natural strength is a huge benefit. Look at Trevor Berbick sure he wasn't a great fighter by any means but he salvaged a very good career on limited skills but his strength made him a very tough opponent thats pretty how he beat Pinklon Thomas and gave Larry Holmes a tough fight. When you're very physically strong you can bully opponents you're punch might not be as fast or even as likely to knock someone out as a more skilled fighter but it'll still carry a lot of weight behind it and back opponents up. It is much easier to control the pace of a fight if you're the stronger fighter. Also strong fighters are often very durable and solid, it isn't easy to move them.Strength certainly isn't everything in boxing but it is a benefit"................. I DISAGREE SLIGHTLY ON MARCIANO.I HAVE READ MANY INTERVIEWS ABOUT HIS STRENGTH AND READ HIS BIO,YOU RIGHT (HE BUILT UP)IN THAT HE USED A 300LB BAG,AND PUNCHED UNDER WATER(HE INVENTED THIS, LATER THEY SAID ALI DID.BUT EVEN AS A KID HE WAS UNBEATEN IN STREET FIGHTS AND ALREADY KNOCKING OUT EVERYONE HIS BRO PETER COULD BANG AS WELL.THEIR MOM WAS A VERY STRONG WOMAN.HE DID DO MANUAL LABOR BUT SO DID EVERYONE ELSE,LOUIS,DEMPSEY.WALCOTT,JOHNSON,VIRTUALLY EVERY HEAVYWEIGHT OF THE PAST.MY POINT IS THE TRAINING I AM SURE HELPED,BUT FEEL IS NATURAL POWER WAS ENORMOUS.STRONG LIMITED FIGHTERS? DON'T FORGET,BONAVENA,BERT COOPER,TONY GALENTO,RON LYLE,FOREMAN(ALREADY SAID) GEORGE CHAVALO EVEN JOHN L SULLIVAN AND JIM JEFFERIES(TREMENDOUS STRENGTH,LOOKED TERRIBLE BOXING),AND OF COURSE TOM SHARKEY.MIDDLEWEIGHT,JUAN ROLDAN WAS INCREDIBLY STRONG,BOTH LIMITED AND SHORT.

Frank, you are so right about Roldan! He bullied Hagler, physically pushing him around.
Randy Turpin was a very strong guy, too.

Oh, I know. I go to a seriously old school body building gym almost daily and watch those guys who bench for an hour at a time, resting 5 minutes between sets. They look at me kinda weird as I deadlift and lunge and full squat with 45 second rests. **** 'em. Hollywood lifters.

I can't really envisage Ellis,Quarry or Bonavena beating George. Freakish raw power more than compensated for any technical shortcomings that the peak Foreman had. If it had n't been for the 1974 model of Muhammad Ali,he'd have held the title for a few years longer.

Steroids were around in the 1960's. Not saying Foreman was ever on juice.

Maybe Quarry if he fought a disciplined fight. He schooled Lyle, after all. Foreman was a physical freak, though. If some fighters hit you perfectly, you might go. Foreman could hurt you when hitting you WRONG!

It's mentioned on here quite often about these modern training techniques that allow a fighter to become more than he could have in comparison to older methods. Yet you always saw videos of George, chopping wood, and pulling vehicles around. George, in his prime today using whatever these methods are (could) have been an even more terrifying beast. Nobody was moving George around in the ring regardless of his age. Some fighters have upper body strength or have a powerful lower body. George was born with both. What a bull.
