Has there ever been an accumulation of punishment to match Lewis-Mavorvic?

That was a big accumulative beating for both boxers, but I don't actually remember any huge clean shots. It was more a case of both boxers landing an outrageous number of short arm-punches that had considerable but not huge power on the inside.

A very good pick- although I don't think either Mercer or Cooper had the power of Lewis both were hard punchers and landed a huge amount of clean punches in that fight.

Didn't Felix Savon rave about Mavrovic's chin as an amateur from first hand experience?

What's even more impressive is that Mavrovic was something like 215 pounds against Lewis. He was outweighed by 30 pounds or so.

Speaking of Lennox, how about Lennox vs. fellow power punching brit Gary Mason?

Mason had the ever loving **** beaten out of him, but he gave almost as good as he got.

I don't think he ever went off his feet there either. Very Bruno like, that guy. He was even a Bruno sparring partner.

How about Cobb and Shavers? Cobb took some wicked shots in that match.

I watched the fight a couple of months ago. Only during the late rounds did Lewis tee off on regular basis with right hands. He was hardly using Mavrovic's head as target practice for the entire fight.

...dempsey-willard...yes!!! terrible terrible beating...willard got hit with more heavy punches than most guys did in a 10 or 15 round fight....even in some guys' CAREERS!

re: louis- farr..as the years went on and when he was asked if he fought joe louis, he always replied, "if i didn't,. i'd like to know who put these ruddy knots on my head.!"
most of the damage done in that fight was with louis' left jab, as he hurt his right hand early in the fight.

...i thought someone woud have mentioned max baer/primo carnera. carnera took a bad punishment from joe louis too, but in fewer rounds.

tony galento made the mistake of knocking joe louis down and not finishing him , which only woke joe up and gave galento a bad beating.
louis -abe simon....simon just wouldn't stay down. i forget if it was their first or second fight in which joe knocked the 250 pound simon through the ropes, and ringside reporters saw their lives flash before them.

russ...at least dempsey let willard get his gloves a quarter of an inch off the canvas before he smacked him again, and that was within the rules of the time. aha..speaking of dempsey, he was a great combo fighter....a left hook below the belt and a right hand hand followed by a butt if the opponent wasn't crawling around the canvas in agony by that time. sometimes he and marciano meet in a fantasy match. if they had met there might have been a double disqualification or a double knockout .

Yeah, Mercer-Cooper was a bombfest. It's one of those things where someone looking on Boxrec would see the wide scores and figure it was an easy win, but in reality they knocked ten bells out of each other. Mercer did deserve those scores but he had to battle like hell for every round.

Russell - yes, Savon beat Mavrovic on points in the amateurs and was afterwards praised his chin a lot.
