Has there ever been anyone on Calzaghe's level exhibiting as bad punching technique?

An observation on the following quote ''in reaching the level he did with that kind of at least seemingly sloppy punching'', that sentance implies too me he reached the level {World title level ?} with 'bad punching technique', well he did not, he won the World title and defended it a couple of times with a more conventional punching technique, he managed to stay at 'World title' level with a more 'sloppy' technique after winning a World title, the punching technique you are familiar with did not get Calzaghe to championship level to begin with.

i agree that he throws his hands weierdly he has FAR better technique than some...even better fighters have worse technique.

 

i think joe slapped more cuz of his bad hands - he's maybe worried that he may break his hand yet again if he goes all out full power on every shot. that's a natural reaction. anyway he's never been beaten.

 

The Calzaghe v Lawlor example was typical of an 'early' Calzaghe fight, fast hands, fast feet, good body position, hands held high, chin tucked in and good clean punches thrown in combinations, Joe Calzaghe pre injuries was a skilled boxer, unfortunately a lot of people only seen him at the end of his career and therefore think he had a sloppy style, the opposite was actually true of a young Joe, he was highly skilled.

 

I dont quite know how to take Vantage_West point of ''even better fighters have worse technique'' comment , as there are not that many boxers better than Calzaghe, he makes a lot of peoples ATG top 100, but yes there are boxers inside the ATG top 100 with worse technique than Joe Calzaghe.

 

That's the truth of the matter and answers a better and more germane question that was actually asked.

 

i also think his training methods have something to do with it as in his latter fights he trained for lots of fast combinations in sacrifice of accuracy
