Has there ever been as good a long-range fighter as Hearns at ww-lmw?

Maybe Ali could compare, but I have trouble coming up with anyone else. And I certainly draw a blank trying to come up with someone better at long range.

    What do you think?

    Bob Foster.

Jones is worth a mention as well, as is Monzon.

Lennox Lewis was superb at long range. He had McCall under control throughout their return fight. Tua had no awnsers for Lewis' movement and jab either. That was part of the reason Lewis was so good, his long range boxing ability. His powerful reputation kept fighters wary of committing themselves as they realised they could be stepping into right hand and uppercut. Obviously Lewis' lateral movement kept his opponents where he wanted them, right at the end of his shots. He wasn't as schooled as Bowe when up close as he prefered to grab and use his weight and strength on his opponents. Lewis leaned over opponents a lot to wear them down.

As far as I know no one troubled Hearns at range at ww-lmw. To compare with some of the other names mentioned:

Ali: Both B. Foster and D. Jones gave him some trouble at range (he wasn't quite in his prime for either, though)

Holmes: Witherspoon gave him some trouble with his jab.

Lewis: Bruno gave him some trouble at range, and so did V. Klitschko.

Foster might just have been supreme at long range at his best weight (lhv). That he managed to trouble a still very good, but perhaps a bit nonchalant, Ali at HW, is really testiment to his mastery of the long range.

imo the light middle weight wink wright is a very effective long range fighter, he can beat world calibre opponents with a relentless jab on the outside.

:thinkThis is true. Itchy trigger finger on our Classic forum comrades, i figure. Having said that....no, no there has never been. Hearns was deadly at long range.

Well the thread starter has actually misled us. He himself nominates Ali in his sub plot. I knew it was aimed at ww-lmw but upon seeing Ali mentioned and everyone carry on from there just named Jones. There's possibly no better long range fighter full stop let alone in narrowed ranks.

Ahh...fair enough friend. i missed that one and quite right on the Jones vote. That s.o.b was slick and deadly at long range. I also fancy the lightweight Whitaker.
